Ontario's minimum wage is increasing to $17.95 on October 1, benefiting over 700,000 low-paid workers in retail, hospitality, and food services.♥️🇨🇦
Ontario’s minimum wage is getting another small bump — and Toronto workers will see it this fall. On October 1, the provincial government will raise the general minimum wage from $17.60 to $17.95 an hour under its inflation‑linked formula. That 35‑cent increase amounts to about $728 more a year for someone working 40 hours a week, a modest boost amid rising living costs in the GTA. The change affects more than 700,000 minimum‑wage workers across Ontario, especially in sectors like retail, hospitality, and food services.
Despite the increase putting Ontario among the higher provincial rates in Canada, worker advocates note it still falls well below estimated living wage levels in Toronto and surrounding areas. Businesses will get roughly six months’ notice before the change takes effect, giving payroll teams time to adjust.
For many Torontonians juggling rent, transit, and food prices, the extra cash helps, but it won’t erase affordability pressures this year. Expect local conversations about broader living wage policies to continue as costs keep climbing.
