Truth and reconciliation cannot be confined to one day.

September 30 asks us to remember — but it also asks us to learn.

To listen to the voices and experiences of First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples.

To understand the history and continuing impacts of the residential school system.

To recognize that reconciliation is an ongoing responsibility that extends beyond wearing orange or observing a single day each year.

As a law firm, we believe there is particular importance in understanding the role that laws, institutions and systems have played in Canada’s history — and in continuing to learn how those histories shape experiences today.

Today, we pause and reflect.

Tomorrow, the work of learning and reconciliation continues.

Why do we wear orange on September 30? 🧡

Orange Shirt Day grew from the experience of residential school Survivor Phyllis Webstad.

In 1973, at six years old, Phyllis arrived at residential school wearing a new orange shirt that her grandmother had bought for her. Upon arriving, her clothing — including the orange shirt — was taken from her.

Her experience became a powerful symbol of the harm caused by the residential school system and of the importance of affirming that Every Child Matters.

September 30 was chosen for Orange Shirt Day in part because it represents the time of year when Indigenous children were historically taken from their homes and families and sent to residential schools.

Today, we listen. We learn. We remember.

Today, September 30, Shaya Law Professional Corporation is closed in observance of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

Today is a day to honour Survivors of Canada’s residential school system, remember the children who never returned home, and recognize the lasting and intergenerational impacts on First Nations, Inuit and Métis families and communities.

Our office closure is an opportunity to pause, learn and reflect on the truth of Canada’s residential school system and its continuing legacy.

We acknowledge that our office is located on the traditional territory of many Nations, including the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishnabeg, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee and the Wendat peoples, and is now home to many diverse First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples.

We are grateful to live and work on this land and recognize our ongoing responsibility to learn, listen and contribute to reconciliation.

Our office will reopen tomorrow, October 1, at 10:00 a.m.

Healing after a relationship breakdown looks different for everyone.

Before the legal issues are resolved, there is often a deeply personal process of healing that takes place. That may mean therapy for some, but not for everyone. Sometimes it means time, reflection, rebuilding routines, or simply leaning on the people who care about you.

We often hear from people who hesitate to turn to friends and family because they feel like they are talking about the same problems over and over again. But it’s okay to lean on your people. Chances are, if someone you loved was going through a difficult time, you would want them to lean on you too.

And then there can be another kind of closure.

Taking the steps to resolve the outstanding legal issues from a relationship, putting agreements in place, and finally wrapping things up can provide its own sense of closure. It doesn’t erase what happened or complete the personal healing process—but for some clients, being able to say “the legal chapter is finished” can be an important part of moving forward.

There is no single way to heal, and there is no set timeline for doing it.

Relationship breakdown is more than the end of a relationship—it can also be the experience of profound grief.

Many people find themselves grieving not only the loss of their partner, but also the future they had envisioned, the routines they shared, the life they built together, and the dreams they hoped to achieve.

It’s important to remember that grief isn’t reserved for death. The end of a relationship can bring a deep sense of loss, even when separation is the right decision.

Acknowledging that grief is often the first step toward healing.

Stigma around Divorce

Divorce is one of life’s most significant transitions, yet it is often accompanied by stigma.

Many people stay silent about their experiences because they fear judgment—from family, friends, their community, or even themselves. That stigma can make an already difficult situation feel even more isolating.

The reality is that every relationship is different, and every decision to separate comes with its own unique circumstances. Choosing to leave a relationship is rarely simple, and it should never be reduced to assumptions or stereotypes.

By approaching conversations about divorce with empathy rather than judgment, we can create a space where people feel supported, informed, and empowered to make the decisions that are right for them and their families.

In this week’s Chat with Shaya, we discuss the stigma surrounding divorce and why changing the conversation matters.

A legal system exists to serve people.

Behind every legal question is a person looking for guidance, clarity, or a path forward. Everyone deserves to be treated with dignity, respect, and compassion.

This Canada Day, we’re reminded that strong communities are built not only through the laws that govern us, but through the way we care for and support one another.

At Shaya Law, we are proud to play a small part in helping individuals and families move forward with confidence.

As lawyers, we have the privilege of meeting people during some of life’s most significant moments.

We celebrate with first-time home buyers receiving the keys to a new beginning.

We help families navigate change with compassion and care.

We assist entrepreneurs as they take the leap to build something of their own.

We guide individuals as they plan for the future through wills and estate planning.

Behind every file is a story. Every story is unique. Every story matters.

This Canada Day, we’re grateful for the trust our clients place in us and for the opportunity to serve such a diverse and vibrant community.

Today, we mark Canada Day.

Canada is situated on the traditional territories of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples, whose histories, cultures, and contributions continue to shape this country.

Canada is also home to people from around the world—those whose families have lived here for generations and those who have made Canada their home in search of opportunity, safety, or a new beginning.

Together, they contribute to the rich diversity that defines our communities.

Canada Day is a time to celebrate the people, communities, and diversity that make Canada home, while also reflecting on our shared history and the ongoing journey toward truth, reconciliation, and a more inclusive future.

When I speak with clients who have experienced intimate partner violence, I often find that they can identify the physical incidents or verbal altercations. Those moments stand out because they’re more obvious.

What is often much harder to recognize is the coercive control. Because it is so deeply integrated into everyday life, many survivors don’t immediately recognize it for what it is.

Recognizing coercive control is an important step in understanding the full picture of abuse.
