Did you know what day it is?

The International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade is to be commemorated on 25 March, when the Abolition of the Slave Trade Act was passed in the United Kingdom on 25 March 1807. From that day on, “all manner of dealing and reading in the purchase, sal...

Thank you, Canadian Association of Black Lawyers, for taking a stand on this. These allegations are devastating to our profession.

Standing in Solidarity with Sudine Riley Esq. Riley

The Canadian Association of Black Lawyers (CABL) expresses its profound outrage and stands in resolute solidarity with Sudine Riley following an alleged assault by uniformed officers at the Oshawa courthouse.

Ms. Riley, a dedicated criminal defence lawyer, was subjected to unacceptable treatment while simply doing her job. As her counsel stated, she “committed no offence other than being a Black woman practising law.”

Our Demands:
- A full, independent, and transparent investigation.
- Absolute accountability for all officers involved.
- Meaningful action to ensure anti-Black racism and violence have no place in our halls of justice.

Incidents like these erode public confidence and send a chilling message about who is truly protected within our legal system. CABL remains committed to advocating for a future where Black lawyers can practice with dignity and without fear.

A moment of profound pride for our family as we express our sincere gratitude to Bank of Saint Lucia for officially acknowledging Hilford D.A. Deterville as one of its founders.

History is often written in the halls of power, but the seeds of progress are sown in the hearts of visionaries. According to our family history, before the National Commercial Bank (NCB) was established, H.D.A.D. envisioned a future in which the people of Saint Lucia would own their own commercial bank.

He didn’t just hold this vision in private; he took it to the streets. Standing at the then Columbus Square during a public Forum meeting, he declared that economic independence would be the next frontier for our nation through “owning the commanding heights of the economy”.

True to his word, following the closure of Chase Manhattan Bank, he followed up that vision by approaching then-Prime Minister Louisy, who eventually enlisted Mr Pilgrim to execute the dream that would become the NCB.

To know where we are going, we must honour those who paved the way. Thank you, BOSL, for ensuring this chapter of our story is told.

Have you gotten a copy of the BOSL 2026 Wall Calendar as yet? It’s not just a calendar; it’s a beautiful caption of our shared national history. We are so moved to see his legacy captured within its pages.

A proud moment for our family: Continuing a legacy of service 🇱🇨

I am absolutely thrilled to share the news that my sister, Mtonya A. G. Deterville, and the distinguished Allison A. Jean, have been appointed to the Senate of Saint Lucia.

For our family, this appointment holds a profound significance. Mtonya joins the very chamber where our father resided as President of the Senate during the term 2001 to 2006. Seeing her walk in his footsteps is a moment of immense pride.

Mtonya is exceptionally equipped for this role. As my co-founder and Partner at Deterville & Associates and a former Foreign Service Officer, she brings years of legal expertise and diplomatic experience to the Upper House.

I also want to extend a massive congratulations to Dr. Allison Jean. Her strength and leadership are well known, and her appointment is a significant gain for our legislative body.

Congratulations to you both!

🇱🇨 Your Vote, Your Future: Make Your Voice Heard on December 1st! 🗳️

As Saint Lucia approaches the General Election on Monday, 1st December, 2025, it’s crucial for every eligible citizen to recognize the profound professional and national significance of casting their vote.
This and every election isn’t just about choosing a political party; it’s about electing the representatives who will shape the economic policies, regulatory environment, and public investments that directly impact our careers, businesses, and quality of life for the next four/five years.
Why Your Vote Matters for the Nation:
• Economic Direction: The party you elect will determine the government’s approach to key sectors like Tourism, ICT, and Financial Services. Your vote influences policies on taxation, foreign investment, and job creation.
• Infrastructure and Development: Decisions on national infrastructure projects, from roads and ports to utilities and digital connectivity, are made by the government. These directly affect business efficiency and our ability to compete globally.
• Education and Workforce Development: A progressive Saint Lucia requires a skilled workforce. Voting helps choose leaders committed to investing in relevant education, technical training, and youth employment initiatives that are essential for future talent pipelines.
• Democratic Accountability: Voting is your most powerful tool for holding leaders accountable. It sends a clear message about the performance of the incumbent and the aspirations for the next administration.

Don’t let this opportunity pass you by. Your participation is a core pillar of our vibrant democracy. Show up at the polls and choose the direction you want for your community, your industry, and your country.

One week ago, I was wrapping up an amazing experience as a panelist at not one, but two fantastic events: the CABL Conference and the BFLN Retreat!
Getting to share my journey as a solo practitioner in Ontario and connect with so many incredible colleagues was genuinely rewarding. The energy and engagement from not only my fellow panelists but every other person in the room made it so memorable.
Thank you, thank you, thank you to the organizers of the CABL Conference and the BFLN Retreat for inviting me to be part of your programming. It was a true honour!
Here’s to sharing knowledge and continuing to support each other!

A Moment Captured, A Legacy Questioned

On this Remembrance Day 2025, I pause to focus on a thought provoking discussion which is surrounded by an image that I always associated with the day.

On August 14, 1945, photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt immortalized a spontaneous kiss in Times Square that came to symbolize the jubilant end of World War II. The image, of a U.S. Navy sailor kissing a woman in a white dress was published in LIFE magazine and celebrated for decades as a romantic emblem of peace and relief.

But in recent years, the narrative has shifted. Greta Zimmer Friedman, the woman in the photo, later revealed in articles and interviews that she did not know the sailor and the kiss was not consensual. What was once hailed as euphoric has therefore become a flashpoint for discussions on consent, public memory, and how we interpret history through images.

Recent articles argue the photo should be retired from public celebration, citing its depiction of a non-consensual act. Others see it as a product of its time, a chaotic, emotional moment during an unprecedented global event.

This controversy invites us to reflect on how cultural symbols evolve. Can a photo represent both celebration and violation? Should historical context excuse behavior, or should it deepen our understanding of its impact? WAs communicators, historians, and people of the world, we should ask: Who is an icon? Who gets to tell the story of an icon?
