As we gather with family and friends this Thanksgiving, we want to take a moment to reflect on the many things we are grateful for.

We are thankful for the trust that our clients place in us during some of life's most important milestones and challenges. Whether we are helping with a real estate purchase/sale, business incorporation/reorganization, estate administration, or future planning, it is a privilege to serve our community.

We are also grateful for our dedicated team, whose hard work, professionalism, and commitment to client service make everything we do possible.

Most importantly, we are thankful for the communities of Nipawin, Tisdale and the surrounding areas. Your support, kindness, and confidence in our firm continue to inspire us every day.

This Thanksgiving, we wish you and your loved ones a holiday filled with gratitude, laughter, good food, and quality time with those who matter most.
From all of us at Tomi Law Office, Happy Thanksgiving!

Your Business Is Growing. Are Your Agreements Keeping Up?

A lot can change as a small business grows.

You may start with a few customers, a handshake agreement with a supplier, or a simple understanding with someone you regularly do business with. Over time, the value of the work increases, you hire employees, take on larger projects, work with new suppliers, or enter into longer-term commitments.

But sometimes, the agreements that support the business don’t grow with it. Written agreements can help clarify important questions. But as your business grows, it is worth reviewing whether the agreements you started with still reflect the business you have today. Good contracts aren’t just for when something goes wrong. They help everyone understand what is expected while things are going right.

If your business has changed significantly since your agreements were prepared or you’re still relying largely on verbal arrangements, it may be a good time to have them reviewed and seek advice about what your business needs now.

What business or legal topics would you like us to talk about?

We want these posts to be useful to the people and businesses in our communities. If there’s a question or topic you’d like us to cover in a future post, leave us a comment or send us a message. Chances are, if you’re wondering about it, someone else is too!

Business Partners Today. But What Happens Tomorrow?

One of the exciting things about starting a business with a family member, friend, or business partner is that there is often already a great deal of trust.

But trust and clear expectations are not the same thing.

Before going into business together, there are some important conversations worth having:

Who will own what percentage of the business? Who is contributing the money? Who will work in the business, and will they be paid? Who gets to make important decisions? What happens if more money is needed? What if one person wants to leave?

And perhaps the question no one wants to ask at the beginning: What happens if things don’t work out?

These conversations can feel unnecessary when everyone is excited and getting along. But putting expectations in writing at the beginning can help prevent misunderstandings later.

A good agreement isn’t about expecting the relationship to fail. It’s about giving the business and the relationship a stronger foundation for success.

If you’re planning to go into business with someone, have these conversations early and get professional advice before you get too far down the road. The right advice at the beginning can help you put an arrangement in place that works for everyone and for the business you’re building.

I’m Starting a Business — Should I Incorporate?

It’s one of the first questions many new business owners ask.

The answer? It depends.

Incorporating can offer advantages, including creating a separate legal entity and, in some circumstances, providing tax and planning opportunities. But it also comes with additional costs, annual filings, accounting requirements, and ongoing responsibilities.

Before deciding, consider things like the nature and size of the business, potential liability, expected income, whether there will be other owners, and your longer-term plans for the business.

This is also where having the right people around the table can help. Your lawyer and accountant often look at the decision from different perspectives, legal structure, liability, ownership, tax considerations and future planning, and can help you choose a structure that makes sense for what you’re building.

There isn’t one structure that’s right for every business. The goal is to start with the one that’s right for yours.

September: A Focus on Small Business

As we come out of the Labour Day weekend, it feels like a fitting time to turn our attention to the businesses, entrepreneurs, and people whose work helps keep our communities moving.

Small businesses are an important part of communities like ours. Behind each one are people taking risks, creating jobs, supporting families, and building something they hope will last.

Throughout September, we’ll be sharing a few practical conversations about some of the legal issues small business owners commonly encounter, from starting and structuring a business, to working with family, putting agreements in writing, avoiding disputes, and planning for what’s next.

Whether you’ve been in business for years or are just getting started, we hope you’ll find something useful in the conversations ahead.

And, as always, if there’s a business law topic you’d like us to discuss, please let us know!

It’s hard to believe we’re already halfway through 2026.

As we pause to reflect, we’re filled with gratitude.

Since opening Tomi Law Office in 2018, we have had the privilege of assisting clients with over 2,400 real estate transactions. While we’re proud of that milestone, what it truly represents is something much greater, the trust that individuals, families, farmers, and business owners have placed in our firm over the years.

Behind every transaction is a story: a first home, a growing family, a farm changing hands, a business investment, or a new beginning. Thank you for allowing us to be part of those important moments.

This year has also brought change within our office, and we are incredibly proud of our team for embracing it with professionalism, dedication, and a genuine commitment to serving our clients and communities. Their hard work behind the scenes and at the front lines is the foundation of everything we do.

To our clients, referral partners, and the communities we serve, thank you. Your trust and confidence mean more to us than you know, and we never take it for granted.

Here’s to the second half of the year. We look forward to continuing to serve you and our communities with the same care and commitment you’ve come to expect from Tomi Law Office.

Thank you for being part of our journey.

Not every risk is obvious when buying a property. Every transaction is different and it’s important to understand the purpose of a condition before deciding whether to include it or remove it.

“Do I Really Need a Home Inspection?”

A home inspection isn’t required when buying a property, and some buyers choose to proceed without one. However, it’s important to understand what you’re giving up when you do.

A home may look well-maintained on the surface, but an inspection can help identify issues that may not be immediately visible, such as concerns with the foundation, roof, plumbing, electrical systems, or other major components of the property.

An inspection won’t guarantee that a home is free from defects, but it can provide valuable information and help buyers make more informed decisions before becoming fully committed to the purchase.

Every property and every transaction is different. Understanding the risks and benefits of a home inspection can help you decide what is right for your situation.
