On Saturday, November 11, 2023 we remember all of those brave servicemen and servicewomen who have gave their lives to defend our Country. We encourage all those that are able, to attend a local service in their community and honor those who never made it home.

The poem Freedom Road by Canadian Jacqueline Black, the daughter and wife of brave servicemen, informs us of the significance of this day of Remembrance:

Freedom Road

They should never be forgotten ones
The brave young daughters and young sons
Who gave their lives so long ago
While fighting those who were our foe.

The world has changed; the time has past
And to some the years have gone too fast
To totally erase the pain they found
When comrades fell on foreign ground.

Now those of us who they died for
Must continue to stand and keep the door
Open, to honour and to show respect
Not allowing ourselves to ever forget.

It was freedom road they did pave
So proclaim your thanks to those who gave
As our anthem plays, sing clear and loud
And on Remembrance Day, wear poppies proud.

Today, September 30, 2023 is a day of reflection and remembrance as we recognize the lasting legacy of Residential Schooling in Canada. From the first contact between the Indigenous people of Turtle Island, to the present day, between 3,200 and 30,000 Indigenous children lost their lives as a result of the Residential School system. Children were forcibly separated from their families, were stripped of their languages and rich culture. Today, we recognize the residential schooling system for what it was, cultural genocide. Today, September 30, also known as Orange Shirt Day, we remember the lives of all of the children that never returned home and reflect upon the actions of those that would strip away the rich heritage of the Indigenous, Inuit and Metis people of Canada. The Portside Law LLP Team encourages all Canadians to take today to educate ourselves about the lasting impact of residential schooling, and to remember all the children that never made it home.

We here at Portside Law wish the local fisherman of Area 27 a Happy Setting Day. The local lobster season runs from May 15, to July 15 every year, so make sure you get your fill now, as there is nothing better than fresh locally caught seafood. We wish our fishermen and fisherwomen friends all the best as they start the two month grind, and hope for a great season with mild weather.
