If you are travelling from the USA or Mexico to Canada, you generally cannot make a refugee claim at the border or airport just because you have a connecting flight. Under current rules and the Safe Third Country Agreement (STCA), many people arriving from the United States are not eligible to claim asylum at a land border, and simply having a transit or connecting route through the USA or Mexico can create serious complications depending on how and where you arrive. A connecting flight does not automatically give you the right to apply, and many travellers misunderstand this. Before making travel plans, always check your route, entry point, and legal eligibility because one wrong move can lead to refusal, detention, or removal. If you think you may qualify, get proper immigration advice first — don’t risk your future based on wrong information.
