Beau often tells clients he’s the “least qualified and most expensive therapist” they’ll ever have. While you can certainly share whatever you like with your lawyer, understanding what you need to talk to a lawyer about versus a counsellor or friend will help in many different ways.
Lawyers on TV are dramatized like a lot of other professions (looking at your Greys Anatomy). Lawyers in real life can and will only use the legal facts of your case. Some of the feedback we’ve gotten over the years is that our lawyers can seem a bit “cold”. That’s never their intention, they are simply just trying to flesh out things they can actually apply to your case.
My hope is that if more people understand this, they will feel better represented.

This week: positions vs interests!
I think this is great homework for family law clients to do. If you’re feeling stuck in negotiations or mediation, it can help to sit down and identify what your interests really are. At the end of the day we are all human and our needs are very similar. Building a solution around “stability” can feel a lot easier than arguing about who gets what.
This is something you can carry forward in all areas of conflict as well. You may learn something about yourself or something about someone else in the process.

So many people I’ve helped onboard have said self-deprecating comments or apologized for not knowing something I would have never expected them to know.

I believe that one of the most important relationships we have in life is the relationship we have with ourself. Life is already hard enough, it only gets harder when you don’t have your own back.

Let the pros handle it! That’s why we’re here.

Give yourself some grace. Whether you’re navigating a family matter or not. We all deserve to be kind to ourselves.

This week: conflict checks explained!
When I started at Evolve, I took for granted that most people weren’t aware that conflict checks were required before discussing their matter with a lawyer.
My hope is that if more people are aware of this requirement, that they’ll be ready when they reach out to an office to either expect it or prevent any delays by providing the necessary information right away.

Hey everyone! 👋 It’s about time I introduce myself.
I’m Jayda, the onboarding specialist at Evolve Family Law (and the one behind these accounts).
I have wanted to do something like this for a long time. Working in the family law sector has taught me a lot. I love having conversations with people about it because I think it de-mystifies the process. And if people can go into a family law firm with more realistic expectations and better knowledge, I believe they will have a better experience overall.
I plan to touch on a number of topics, anywhere from personal mental health tips to what exactly a conflict search is. I am open to any suggestions! If there’s anything your particularly curious on, please drop a comment below or send me a message.
DISCLAIMER: None of this is legal advice 😊
See you next Friday! 🦋

A majority of family matters are actually resolved outside of court. Lawyers negotiate back and forth on your behalf to come an agreement. If an agreement is reached, court often isn't necessary at all.
Court appearances are expensive, so it's in our client's best interests to resolve things before getting to that point. At our office, we'll be honest with you about cost and chances of success. It might not be what you want to hear in the moment, but our clients are always grateful we told them the truth.
Unfortunately, court isn't always avoidable. But it should be the last resort.
Hiring a lawyer (especially at our office) means having someone in your corner who understands the process, can tell you what's realistic, and can help you get to a resolution without it becoming more complicated or more expensive than it needs to be.

If you've never hired a lawyer, the idea of "booking a consultation" can feel like a much bigger deal than it is.
Here's what actually happens: You submit an inquiry to our office (over the phone or on our website) and we'll contact you. There's absolutely no need to have everything figured out before you call.
During the call, your lawyer asks about your situation, explains how the process works, and tells you what your realistic options are. You can ask whatever burning questions you may have and get practical advice.
At the end, if there are next steps that make sense for your situation, your lawyer will explain what they are and what they'd cost. You don't have to decide anything on the call.
That's it! Nobody sends you a bill for asking questions. Nobody pressures you into anything. You simply get off the phone knowing more than you did before.
Most people tell us they wish they'd called sooner for this exact reason.

Sometimes people shy away from our office because they don't understand our biling structure. We totally understand the hesitation. Whether you're coming to us never having spoken to a lawyer before or are coming from a different office, it can be very diffcult to try and wrap your head around when you're already dealing with so much. It might be easier to go with what you know.

However, more often than not, clients who end up coming back to us express remorse that they didn't stick with us in the first place. If you're intinimated or concerned, we urge you to reach out. We will happily explain the way our office works and answer any questions you may have!

Legal assistance is certainly not cheap but it may be more accessible than you thought.

The legal community has been trying to tackle the issue of access to justice for decades. There are very real factors that prevents people from securing counsel.

At our office, we've tried to bridge this gap by providing flat-fees and payment plans. Every single one of the services we provide has a flat-fee that you are quoted before you decide to proceed. We're incredibly proud to offer payment plans on top of this as well.

Most of our services require a $1000 initial payment to get started and then the rest of the fee is split over a series of monthly installments.

If you've been putting off calling our office because you assumed you couldn't afford it, it's worth at least discussing your options! You may be surprised 😉

One of the most common reasons people don't call a family lawyer is the fear of the cost of legal fees. We built our payment plans specifically to try and change that by offering flexbility to our transparent flat-fee structure.

If the structure still doesn't work for your situation, please reach out. We appreciate that every circumstance is different and we'd rather have that conversation than have cost be the reason you can't get help. We can usually find something that works for everybody ☺️
