Kensian & Associates Join Vesta Law on our transition to Kensian and Associates, a new name behind the same standard of excellence you have come to expect. This was a new beginning.

We are proud to continue supporting the people of Red Deer and Central Alberta, reborn again as Kensian and Associates! We started our journey in 2016, in Red Deer Alberta, under the name Vesta Law. As our firm began to flourish and gain momentum, the unforeseen arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic brought unprecedented challenges. However, with resilience and adaptability, we weathered the storm, embracing remote work and leveraging technology to continue serving our clients effectively. Just when it seemed like the worst was behind us, a devastating fire struck our office, reducing everything that we had built to ashes. Undeterred by this setback, our firm's team rallied together, determined to rise again and rebuild what was lost. With drive, an unwavering spirit and a tireless commitment to our clients, we forged ahead, learning from the past and capitalizing on the opportunity for a fresh start. We rebuilt our office space with state-of-the-art facilities and employed the latest advancements in legal technology to better serve our clients. The fire had served as a catalyst for transformation, and our firm emerged from the ashes even better and stronger than before. Our experiences have honed our expertise, deepened our compassion, and solidified our commitment to excellence. We become Kensian & Associates. That’s the first two minutes. Here’s what usually happens after them.

Somebody books you in, and you turn up to an office on 49 Ave with a folder, or a shoebox, or a screenshot on your phone, or nothing at all. All of those are fine. Sorting them is our job.

You explain it once. Not to a receptionist, then a paralegal, then a lawyer — once, to the person who’ll be handling it.

Then you find out where you actually stand. What the options are, roughly what each one costs, roughly how long each takes. Sometimes the honest answer is that you don’t need us, and you’ll be told that too.

You don’t sign anything in the room.

Most people leave having understood more than they expected to, and having found the thing they were dreading was smaller than the not-knowing had been.

That’s the whole process. It starts with a phone call.

Every decision in a Will comes down to the same question. Who sits in the chair when you can’t?

Who winds up your affairs. Who raises your children, if they’re under eighteen. Who receives what you have.

The chair doesn’t stay empty either way. If you’ve written a Will, the person sitting there is the one you named. If you haven’t, Part 3 of Alberta’s Wills and Succession Act sets out who inherits, and the Estate Administration Act determines who has preference to apply to administer the estate. The decision still gets made — just not by you, and usually slower and more expensively.

The most common reason people give for not having a Will is that they don’t own a house. But a Will isn’t really about property. A bank account, a vehicle, a pension, life insurance, a share in a family business — that’s an estate, and most people have more of one than they think.

If this has been on your list for a few years, it’s a shorter appointment than you’re expecting.

When people picture a separation, most of them picture a courtroom.

There are five ways a family matter can be resolved in Alberta, and four of them happen well before anyone files anything.

Negotiation between lawyers. Settlement agreements. Mediation. And the Collaborative process, where both people commit in writing to reaching an agreement without going to court.

Agreements reached through any of those are binding and enforceable — and generally faster, less expensive, and a great deal easier on a relationship that has to keep working afterwards, particularly where there are children.

Court is the fifth door. It exists for the matters that genuinely need it, and some do. But it’s rarely the first one anyone should try.

If you’ve been putting off a conversation because you assumed there was only one way through, there isn’t.
