10/04/2026

October 4th is the National Day of Action for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and 2SLGBTQIA+ (MMIWG2S+), also known as Sisters in Spirit Day.

The movement began in 2004 through the work of the Native Women's Association of Canada (NWAC), which launched the Sisters in Spirit initiative to bring awareness to the alarming rates of violence experienced by Indigenous women, girls and 2SLGBTQIA+ document stories, and advocate for justice and systemic change. The initiative's research revealed hundreds of Indigenous women and girls who were missing or murdered, helping bring national attention to a crisis that Indigenous families had been speaking about for generations.

Since then, Sisters in Spirit has grown into a grassroots movement of remembrance, advocacy, and action. Every year on October 4th, communities gather in vigils, walks, and ceremonies to honour those who are missing, those who were taken, and the families who continue to carry their stories.

Today on October 4th we remember why this work exists. We remember our Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQIA+ relatives whose voices have too often gone unheard. We remember the families still searching for answers, the survivors whose strength continues to inspire us, and those who continue to face violence and injustice every day. May they remain at the center of every conversation we have, every decision we make, and every path we choose.

We raise our hands to our ancestors, our matriarchs, our loved ones who have journeyed to the spirit world. We know they continue to walk beside us.
