We were here once before.

Trying to figure out where the hell we were supposed to call home. We had left downtown Vancouver and moved to North Van. We loved it. The mountains, the energy, being close to the city. Then our landlord told us they wanted to move back in, so we had to start looking again.

The problem? At that point, we couldn’t afford the North Shore. We had Sadie, our dog, and we were starting to settle into a different kind of life. Less chaos. More space. A little slower.

So we looked farther out and eventually landed in Port Moody.

At the time, I don’t think we realized what we were choosing. We were just trying to find somewhere that worked. Then life happened. We settled in, built friendships, found our routines, and eventually Finnley came along. He’s almost six now.

Suddenly, the things we cared about changed. We cared about where our kid would grow up, who our neighbours were, whether he could ride his bike outside, whether we could walk to the trails, and whether we’d actually know the people around us.

Six months after we unpacked, life got quiet. Not silent. Steady.

Looking back, we got lucky. Because we didn’t know what we know now. We didn’t understand how much your neighbourhood would shape your life or what questions we should have been asking.

But you can.

Choosing a suburb isn’t about finding the “best” one. It’s about finding the one that fits the life you’re trying to build. Every community gives you something, and every community asks you to give something up.

👉 If you’re thinking about making a move, whether this fall or sometime soon, I put everything I’ve learned (after four moves, almost 6 years of parenthood, and helping hundreds of young families) into a Suburb Guide you can skim through in minutes.

✅ COMMENT or DM “GUIDE” and I’ll send it your way.

We weren’t unhappy…

but we were exhausted.

And then, somewhere in your 30s, it happens.

Your wife looks at you and says,

“I think it’s time we leave downtown.”

Not because anything is wrong but because the life you want is starting to look different.

More space.
More quiet.
More community.

And you don’t fully realize how tired you are until you step away from it.

Out here, life feels different in ways that are hard to explain until you live it.

Mornings start quieter.
You hear birds before sirens.
Coffee doesn’t feel rushed.

Weekends aren’t spent recovering from the week, they’re spent on the water, on the trails, at the brewery with friends, or walking home with the dog while your kids scooter ahead of you.

The seasons slow you down, in the best way.
They give life a rhythm again.

People don’t move here just for the mountains or the ocean.

They move for time.
For space to breathe.
For neighbourhoods where kids play outside and you actually know your neighbours.

For a community that fits who you are now, not who you were at 25.

We didn’t trade one city for another.

We traded stress for presence.
Gridlock for green space.
Always rushing for actually living.

And once you experience life this way…

you understand why so many people quietly decide they’re never going back.

If your 30s are nudging you to rethink downtown life…

👉 DM me “GUIDE” and I’ll send you my breakdown of Vancouver’s best lifestyle-first neighbourhoods with real price points, transit, schools, walkability, and what day-to-day life actually feels like.

Because this move isn’t about leaving Vancouver.

It’s about finding a community that finally fits.
