James Starkey:
WARNING - Yesterday I was pulled over by a bogus police officer in Randburg. He drives a light silver / white VW polo sedan. I know of these scams but having nothing to hide he said I was free to go however I smelt a rat and asked the alleged plain clothes Captain for his ID which he then refused to show me saying I must follow him to Linden SAP two blocks away. I declined the offer as protocol states he must show me there and then and I said we can go but in my vehicle. He tried to drive off and I took his car keys and an struggle ensued and he pulled his "pistol" on me which I thankfully managed to disarm him and I asked bystanders to call the SAP. I did get the below I.D. off him eventually and the resemblance is striking however the actual Capt is allegedly out of SA. A local security company sadly got involved and I gave them the firearm and keys which they very stupidly (or intentionally) left lying in the suspects car and as the SAP arrived he managed to escape gun and all and after having possession of him, the firearm and the car. Chassas I was cross. Apparently the Indian gent has been posing as a policeman and "arresting" people who normally are doing illegal activities and then fear being locked up and taking bribes. Two weeks ago he took R 20 000 from someone in such an event. ALWAYS ask for ID. It's your right. If you do see a Polo Sedan driven by a well dressed Indian man please forward me information. I never took down the registration as I felt safe having the car in my possession until the guys bungled the situation by "helping" me yesterday......and another warning is not to go to a gun fight with a pen.
Yusuf Abramjee: I have asked for an immediate investigation. The provincial commissioner of Gauteng has been briefed.
