A proud Portside moment! ✨

Our very own Maggie House has been featured in the Law Foundation of BC’s annual report for her work advancing access to family law services across the province.

Through her work with Rise Women’s Legal Centre, Maggie helped lead a 2022 pilot project focused on providing centralized supervision for family law advocates, particularly those serving rural and remote communities where legal services can be difficult to access.

We’re so proud to see Maggie’s leadership, expertise, and commitment to access to justice recognized. Congratulations, Maggie!

When a marriage ends, dividing the family’s assets can become significantly more complicated when one spouse owns or operates a business.

The British Columbia Supreme Court’s decision in Tyrell v. Tyrell, 2025 BCSC 94, provides a useful example of how these issues can arise in the context of a long-term marriage.

The decision addresses several important questions concerning business valuation, property division, spousal support, and the determination of income where a spouse operates through a privately held corporation.Tyrell v. Tyrell demonstrates why financial issues arising from the breakdown of a long-term marriage can become particularly complicated when one spouse operates a private corporation.

If you need help with a separation on a complex corporate matter, we would invite you to contact one of the many lawyers we have a Portside Law Corporation who would be able to assist you.

Today, on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, Portside Law takes a moment to reflect and honour the experiences of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples.

Truth and Reconciliation calls on all of us to acknowledge the harms caused, while recognizing the ongoing impacts experienced by Indigenous communities today.
As a law firm, we recognize the important role that justice, advocacy, and the legal system can play in advancing reconciliation. We are committed to continuing to learn, to listen, and to approach our work with respect for Indigenous rights, lived experiences, and the pursuit of justice.

What is a subpoena?
A subpoena is a court issued document requiring someone to appear in court and give evidence as a witness at a trial.
If you’ve received a subpoena and aren’t sure what it means or what your obligations are, don’t navigate it alone. Understanding your legal rights and responsibilities can help you feel prepared and informed.

"Somewhere out there is a landlord who did everything right. Fixed the leaky tap the same day; never raised the rent above the cap; sent birthday cards. The part that no one tells you about being a landlord is that you can be completely, obviously, morally in the right and still be wrong in the eyes of the Residential Tenancy Act (“RTA”). The RTA does not ask who was reasonable. It asks whether you used the approved form for eviction, served it a way the Act allows and counted the days correctly. So fix the tap, send the birthday card, but keep the receipt and know the rules.”
