Please join us at the seniors health and wellness fair at Beban Park October 23, 2025 between 10 and 3 PM. I’ll have a table there and will be talking about the importance of wills, power of attorneys, representation agreements, and all things that matter as we wander into the golden years. Come say hello to Shannon and I. We will have coffee and Tim bits. Sadly, Franny has to stay home.

The Legacy of Residential Schools in British Columbia

British Columbia's history is profoundly shaped by residential schools, institutions designed for the forced assimilation of Indigenous children, resulting in the loss of language, culture, and family. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) concluded these policies constituted cultural genocide, causing lasting intergenerational trauma.

Truth, Reconciliation, and Action

Responding to the TRC's Call to Action #80, BC established September 30 as the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a statutory holiday. This day, aligning with Orange Shirt Day, honours survivors and remembers children lost, urging all British Columbians to reflect on this painful history.

Ongoing Reconciliation

Reconciliation is a daily commitment, extending beyond one day. It requires sustained collaboration with local Indigenous peoples, such as the Snaw-Naw-As First Nation (Parksville/Qualicum Beach), Snuneymuxw First Nation (Nanaimo), and Stz'uminus First Nation (Ladysmith). Supporting Indigenous businesses is one tangible step towards empowerment. Share your ideas for fostering reconciliation in our communities.

Remember everyone it’s time to turn your clocks back one hour - Daylight Savings time. I don’t know about anyone else but I appreciate Fall back - but not Spring Forward. I love that extra hour in the fall but DO NOT LIKE the lack of the hour to sleep in the Spring.

Seems like the voter of BC don’t like it either. Do you remember when in 2019 93 % of us voted in favour of a move to permanently changing to daylight time. The BC Leg even passed a motion for the change but the government made the decision not to do anything so drastic until we got in sync with our family across the border. Given trade (yeah right) and social connections etc. Actually makes a lot of sense. But talks have been ongoing since. Premier Eby has made comment at a news conference since the tariff war with the US that “has him reconsidering whether BC should base its time zone on that of our U.S. neighbours. He suggest BC should ‘stand on our own two feet as a province in relation to everything, including time zones…. I’ll ponder that once”. (Quote CBC)

I have to say that I too would ponder agreeing with anything that the POTUS is saying right now but losing an hour of sleep…. By the way did you know that that BC Peace region and the Kootenay town of Creston have never changed their clocks to daylight savings time and BC East Kootenays are currently aligned with Alberta. And the Yukon in 2020 decided to stay on daylight savings time all year long deciding to give their residents more daylight in the evening during winter.

There is much more to say about the ‘changing the clock debate” but the sum of it all is that we lose an hour because we have to move our clocks ahead at 2 a.m. tomorrow morning. And we will all probably be late for our appointments tomorrow.

The information contained above is from Courtney DIckson’s excellent article for CBC News.
