McGill Journal of Sustainable Development Law

McGill Journal of Sustainable Development Law A bilingual academic journal focused on economics, human rights, the environment, and law.

The MJSDL is a bilingual, student-run, peer-reviewed academic journal based at McGill University's Faculty of Law in Montreal, Canada.

We have published sixteen issues, which have been well-received by our international subscribers, including law faculties, government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and law firms. Volume 13, Issue 1 of the Journal is expected to be published in early Spring 2017. The Journal is unique in its goal to provide a forum for productive debate and critical analysis of the economic, societal, and environmental issues surrounding sustainable development law and policy. This area of inquiry is of increasing international importance, and the MJSDL is one of the few opportunities for focused commentary from academics and practitioners alike.

NEW PUBLICATION: The Battery Rush and Global Supply Chains: Regulatory Pathways Towards Resilient Supply Chains of Critical Minerals in the United States and the EU by Sirja-Leena Penttinen & Emily Burlinghaus

In recent years, international supply chains have come under stress at both the national and international levels. One such supply chain is batteries, a key technology to drive the low-carbon energy transition. In this paper, we use a systemic perspective to examine how to enhance resilience of the battery supply chain by analysing recent measures introduced as a response to the security concerns of the battery supply chain by the first and third largest economies in the world—the United States (US) and the European Union (EU).

We focus on the measures introduced by the US and the EU in the period up to and including 2024 because these two jurisdictions dominate the increasing share of global lithium-ion battery cell demand with China and have introduced measures specifically to reduce dependency on the latter—the dominant actor in the battery supply chain.

We seek to examine the measures introduced to enhance battery supply chain resilience in both the US and the EU against the framework of resilience—specifically, the three capacities of resilience: absorption, adaption, and transformation. We use these capacities of resilience as a framework for analysing different jurisdictional priorities around strengthening battery supply chains in the US and EU.

The event will take place from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Monday, January 12th, 2026, at Maison du développement durable located at 50 rue Sainte-Catherine Ouest.

As the intersection of law and the environment intensifies, related practice areas and fields are increasingly relevant to our work yet fall outside of the conventional law school curriculum. Last year, we connected over 60 students with professionals practicing environmental law or in related fields through this event. This is an opportunity to connect with professionals and law students with compatible interests in this growing field.

The evening will begin with a 45-minute cocktail reception and keynote speaker in the Hydro-Quebec Room, followed by small-group discussions in the Clark Room. To conclude, there will be an open networking session for those who wish to continue the conversations.

Drinks and bites will be provided. Attire is business casual.
