The phenomenon of lawyers embracing political causes and translating them into legal action is not recent, but its conceptualisation and study as cause lawyering is. LSAT QUESTION OF THE WEEK ⚖️
Argument Exchange

Tom: It is impossible to hit off the Yankee pitcher Turley.
Jim: You're just saying that because he struck you out three times yesterday.

Which one of the following would strengthen Tom's argument most ?

a. Tom is a good hitter
b. Turley pitched a no-hitter yesterday.
c. Tom has not struck out three times in a game all season.
d. Tom has not struck out all season
e. Turley has not given up a hit to Jim or Tom all season.

The correct answer is B. Tom's is a general statement about Turley's relationship to all hitters. All choices except B mention only Tom or Jim, not hitters in general.

LSAT QUESTION OF THE WEEK ⚖️
Parallel Reasoning or Similarity of Logic

Alex said, "All lemons I have tasted are sour; therefore all lemons are sour."

Which of the following most closely parallels the logic of the above statement?

A. I have eaten pickles four times and I got sick each time; therefore, if I eat another pickle, I will get sick.
B. My income has increased each year for the past four years; therefore, it will increase again next year.
C. I sped to work every day last week and I did not get a ticket; therefore, they do not give tickets for speeding around here any more.
D. All flormids are green. This moncle is red; therefore, it is not a flormid.
E. Every teacher I had in school was mean; therefore, all teachers are mean.

ANSWER: The correct answer is E. First, the logic of the original is faulty; therefore , the correct choice must also be faulty, eliminating D. Next, notice the direction of connections: generalization from a few experiences -> generalization about all similar experiences. A and B each project the result of a few past experiences to only ONE to one similar experience. C starts from a few experiences, but finishes with a result that implies a change in a specific area. You could assume that "they" used to give tickets here.

Dear Law and Society Students,

As some of you may know, Concordia has appointed our very first jurist-in-residence, Morton Minc, as a mentor to students who are interested in our legal system and who might be considering applying to law school after completing their Baccalaureate.

Judge Minc looks forward to meeting with Law and Society students and to answering any questions you might have. You can reach him at [email protected], or by calling 514-848-2424 Ext. 2410.

Along with being a mentor, Judge Minc has great opportunities planned for all students during his time here, and we’ll be sure to keep you all posted as they are planned.
