🇨🇦 Good news for foreign workers in Canada.

The government has extended the concurrent processing period from 60 to 90 days for eligible work permit applicants under the Temporary Foreign Worker Program. This means that some applicants can submit their work permit application while their employer's Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) is still being processed and will now have more time to provide the positive LMIA decision.

This change comes at a time when LMIA processing times remain lengthy. Current averages range from 10 business days under the Global Talent Stream to 88 days for High Wage positions, 73 days for Low Wage positions, and 86 days under the Permanent Residence stream.

In our experience, some applications can take even longer than the published averages. So extending the window to 90 days is a practical and welcome change. It should help reduce uncertainty for workers whose permits are close to expiring while they wait for an LMIA decision.

Although this does not solve processing delays, it is a step in the right direction and may provide greater flexibility for foreign workers trying to maintain their status in Canada.

🇨🇦 Think an old Criminal Record cannot affect your travel to Canada? Think again.

Many travellers are surprised to learn that a criminal offence from years, or even decades, ago can still create problems at the Canadian border.

A common misconception is that if a conviction is old, minor, or has already been resolved in another country, it will not be relevant when entering Canada. Unfortunately, that is not always the case.

At Mobilitys we have see situations where individuals are denied entry because of offences that occurred 10, 15, or even 20 years ago.

What travellers should know:

• Canadian immigration authorities conduct their own admissibility assessment
• A foreign conviction may be treated differently under Canadian law
• Even a single offence can result in criminal inadmissibility
• Past offences do not automatically disappear for immigration purposes
• Discovering an issue at the border is often too late

One of the biggest mistakes we see is assuming that "it happened a long time ago, so it does not matter anymore."

In reality, age alone does not eliminate an admissibility concern. Every case requires a careful legal review of the offence, the sentence imposed, the date of completion, and how the offence compares to Canadian legislation.

The best approach is simple: know your history before you travel. Identifying potential issues in advance may allow you to explore available legal options and avoid complications at the port of entry.

🇨🇦 OINP Is Changing: What workers and Ontario graduates should know

🇨🇦A Study Permit, Work Permit, or Visitor Record Is NOT a Travel Document

One of the most common misconceptions in Canadian immigration is the belief that a valid permit automatically allows someone to travel to Canada and enter the country.

We frequently see travellers focus on maintaining their immigration status while overlooking their travel authorization. This often leads to unexpected issues at the airport, delayed travel plans, and urgent immigration applications.

To travel to Canada and seek entry, most foreign nationals must also hold either:

• A valid Temporary Resident Visa (TRV), or
• A valid Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA), depending on their nationality and mode of travel

This distinction is critical.

For example, an individual may have a valid work permit or study permit but be unable to board a flight to Canada because their TRV has expired. Similarly, someone with a visitor record extending their stay in Canada may incorrectly assume they can travel abroad and return using that document alone.

Understanding the role of each document is essential:

✔️ Work Permit: Authorizes employment in Canada
✔️ Study Permit: Authorizes studies in Canada
✔️ Visitor Record: Extends or modifies visitor status in Canada
✔️ TRV: Authorizes travel to Canada and allows a person to seek entry at a Canadian port of entry

It also shifts the burden onto applicants, who must now rely on temporary alternatives without any visibility on permanent reunification pathways.

• No new intake or invitation rounds

• No new applications can be filed

• No confirmed timeline for reopening, with updates expected in 2027
