Immediate financial gain is not the point of or any social platform! Here is a practical example of how LinkedIn works for me but the same would go for too:
1) A contact I have connected with only through LinkedIn asked if I was an expert in an unusual but particular type of law. I wasn't an expert even if I had handled a couple of similar files in the past, so....
2) I told the contact that I would find them some colleagues who I could refer them to, and then...
3) I called some colleagues to confirm if they qualified themselves as experts in that particular type of law and, once confirmed....
4) I referred my LinkedIn contact and hopefully it works out!
In this example, I had no financial gain and in fact it costs me time, even if it was minimal.
If there was no financial gain, what was my incentive to do this?
It gave me the chance to help two people which makes me feel good but it also created and/or cemented real business relationships with two people.
Basically I planted a seed that will grow and only good things can come from it!
