Canadian Home Sales Slide 6.9% Yearly
Lately, we've seen Canadian home sales dip about 1% month-over-month and nearly 7% compared to last year, as mid-Q3 brought both economic uncertainty and the pressure of higher mortgage costs. The national price index held steady this period, although it's down around 3% from a year ago. After months of fewer options, newly listed properties saw a welcome 3% increase. The sales-to-new listings ratio also shifted, easing to roughly 49%—further below the Canadian long-term average of 55%. Economic experts are pointing to rising inflation risks and questions about the pace of growth, with higher bond yields leading to even higher fixed mortgage rates. At this point, markets were factoring in about a 60% chance of an Early-Q4 rate hike, and more than a percentage point of tightening by 2027.
