At one point, these stories were considered a conspiracy, but now they are out in the open. Lana Ponting was just 16 years old when a judge sent her to Montreal’s Allan Memorial Institute in 1958 for what was described as “disobedient” behaviour. Instead of getting help, she ended up being used in secret CIA mind-control experiments known as MK-Ultra.

At the time, she didn’t know what was happening to her. She was given powerful drugs like L*D, subjected to repeated audio recordings meant to reprogram her thoughts, and exposed to extreme psychiatric techniques, all without her consent. The experiments were run at the hospital by psychiatrist Dr Ewen Cameron, whose work was later revealed to be part of a much larger Cold War effort to study mind control. Why would governments want to understand mind control? (rhetorical of course)

For decades, Lana felt something was wrong but didn’t understand why. She had little memory of her time in the hospital and spent much of her life dealing with mental-health struggles, nightmares, and the feeling that something had been taken from her. It wasn’t until much later that she obtained her medical records and learned she had been part of the MK-Ultra experiments. By then, earlier compensation programs had already passed, meaning she and others like her were left out.

Now, Lana is one of two named plaintiffs in a class-action lawsuit against institutions linked to the experiments.

A recent court decision cleared the way for the case to move forward after a hospital appeal was denied. For her, the lawsuit isn’t just about money. It’s about recognition, accountability, and some sense that what happened to her mattered. As she puts it, seeing photos of the doctor who ran the experiments still fills her with anger, but she hopes the case will bring a measure of justice and ensure that the suffering of victims like her is finally acknowledged and learned from.

The bigger question is, does stuff like this still happen? How would we even know if things can be kept under wraps so easily?

Esther, Lloyd Schier's mother, underwent "psychiatric treatment", received electroshock therapy, and was given copious amounts of medications that seem like they were taken right out of George Orwell's totalitarian novel Nineteen Eighty-Four.

In the 1960s, Esther was a patient at the after having sought therapy for what is now regarded as postpartum depression or anxiety.

However, soon after entering the hospital under the "care" of Dr. Ewen Cameron, she became a test subject for nonconsensual experiments that were part of the CIA's widespread program codenamed

Due to his mother's pregnancy at the time, Lloyd Schrier was also an unwilling test subject.

👉 REMINDER: We are re-posting the message below to let everyone know that this page is exclusively for our class action lawsuit concerning the Montreal Experiments and does not represent any other cause related to a Public Inquiry.

📢ANNOUNCEMENT: A small group of people who lost close family members who received treatment at the Allan Memorial Institute are calling for a Public Inquiry and "Institutional Accountability" of the facility, as some of you may already be aware. After careful consideration, we have decided not to endorse this abstract, time-consuming pursuit because it will not benefit our class members in a tangible way:

1. We already have approval from the Quebec Superior Court to move forward with our case, which is essentially a Public Inquiry with the added advantages of victim compensation and objectivity - benefits that a public inquiry CANNOT provide.

2. A Public Inquiry is useless when there is limited interest on the part of Canadians and our group members. With little public support there is nothing to propel the inquiry forward.

3. The Public Inquiry's scope will be restricted to the Allan Memorial Institute, even though nonconsensual mind control experiments were carried out at many other Canadian institutions in the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s, such as Weyburn Mental Hospital in Saskatchewan.

4. Members of our group without records will NOT be able to get them through a Public Inquiry. Records that have been destroyed are already lost, and the government has likely already made every effort to cover it up. Our lawyers will subpoena and arrange for a manual search for records at a later date to determine if they are still under the McGill University Health Centre's control.

5. A Public Inquiry is asking the government to tell people what happened to their family members. We will NOT rely on the perpetrators of these heinous nonconsensual experiments to tell us what really happened at the Allan Memorial Institute. We have had 70 years to figure this out collectively and can tell our own stories without government interference and a repeat of what we all know about medical ethics. Let the families tell the TRUTH to the government NOT the other way around.

If you want to personally support a Public Inquiry that is your right. However, we will NOT tolerate harassment, slander and libel by a few individuals who have made it their mission to disrupt our lawsuit in the name of an imaginary campaign which has little chance of success.
