Oppenheimer Chair in Public International Law

Oppenheimer Chair in Public International Law The Chair seeks to promote the study and research of public international law, with a particular focus on international migration. Twitter:

The Chairholder is François Crépeau, United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Human Rights of Migrants and Professor of Law at McGill University. The Oppenheimer Chair, endowed in 2006, has been created through the generous support of Dr Tamar Oppenheimer, a former Assistant Secretary General of the United Nations and an alumnus of our university, in order to bring a leading scholar and teacher in

the field of public international law to the Faculty. The purpose of the Chair is to reinforce a Canadian focus for the study and research of international law, with particular attention to the relationship between international legal obligations and domestic law. Through his engagement in teaching and research in public international law, the chairholder will advance the understanding of theoretical and practical dimensions of the implementation of international treaty, customary and other obligations in domestic law with due regard to the constitutional setting in federal and unitary states.

"With 2018 marking the 7th anniversary of the Syrian conflict, this issue of FMR explores new insights and continuing challenges relating to the displacement of millions of Syrians both internally and in neighbouring countries. What we learn from responses to this large-scale, multi-faceted displacement is also relevant to other situations of displacement beyond as well as within the Middle East. FMR 57 contains 27 articles on ‘Syrians in displacement’, plus six ‘general’ articles on other topics."
