Could Canada’s growing partnership with Europe mean more opportunities for workers?

Canada is exploring closer ties with the EU, potentially opening up new possibilities in sectors like artificial intelligence, energy, defence and critical minerals.

But could this eventually make it easier for people to work across borders? 👀

Nothing is confirmed yet. Any changes to work permits or immigration pathways would depend on a future agreement, with eligibility and timelines still unclear.

Could temporary residents in Alberta face a $1,900 health-care fee?

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has proposed charging temporary residents $1,900 to access public health-care services.

📌 Important: This is only a proposal and is not a confirmed fee currently in effect.

Temporary residents already contribute to the economy and pay taxes. Should they also have to pay a separate fee for health care?

Canada may be moving towards a “controlled increase” in immigration.

Prime Minister Mark Carney says that with Canada’s immigration system back under control, the next question is when the country should begin increasing its population in a controlled way.

This comes as the federal government prepares to release its next three-year Immigration Levels Plan. The last three plans focused on reducing immigration following a rapid post-pandemic population increase.

The government has also been working to reduce temporary residents, with a target of bringing temporary workers and students down to 5% of Canada’s population.

The next Immigration Levels Plan could provide a clearer picture of whether Canada is ready to shift from reducing arrivals to gradually increasing them.

Employers invest in training. Workers build careers. Families put down roots.

Doug Ford’s remarks highlight what is at stake when workers who are already contributing to Canada cannot remain.

Canada’s immigration planning needs to balance housing and public services with genuine workforce needs, while giving businesses and workers clearer information about who can stay.

It’s important to note: these remarks are about retaining workers, not an announcement of a new PR pathway.

Canada’s next Immigration Levels Plan is already facing calls for major changes.

Conservative MP Michelle Rempel is calling for immigration levels to go “way down, not up,” citing pressures on housing, healthcare, jobs and public services.

She has also raised concerns around asylum claims, temporary foreign workers and international students.

The Liberal government, meanwhile, says its current approach is already focused on reducing temporary resident numbers and keeping permanent resident admissions below 1% of Canada’s population beyond 2027.

With the 2027–2029 Immigration Levels Plan expected this fall, Canada’s immigration targets could see further changes.

What do you think Canada’s next immigration plan should focus on?
