Cognitive dysfunction is a common side effect of attention deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD), and is often identified through lower performance on cognitive tests or reduction in cognitive abilities, like attention and memory.
The thing is, according to a new study, cognitive dysfunction isn’t only a side effect of ADHD.
Many other diagnosable mental disorders — including obsessive compulsive disorder — as well as common mental health symptoms, like anxiety and worry, can also carry a “cognitive price.”
This is important, particularly when evidence shows that doctors frequently prescribe stimulant medication for these types of symptoms, even without a formal ADHD diagnosis. These types of drugs can have a different effect on someone with, say, OCD — resulting in increased irritability and anxiety and, ultimately, exacerbated cognitive dysfunction.
