Canada’s estimated processing time for new proof of citizenship applications has increased to 33 months, according to figures reported in October 2026.
Applicants should be aware of several important points:
• Current estimated processing time: 33 months
• Increase in wait time: approximately 8 months between August and September 2026
• Queue growth: about 14,200 additional applicants joined during that period
• Document preparation can take time, especially when older family records are required
• Incomplete applications, missing signatures, incorrect photos, or weak supporting documents can lead to delays or returned applications
• Urgent processing may be available in certain qualifying situations, but approval is not guaranteed
If you believe you may be a Canadian citizen by descent, it is important to start gathering family records as early as possible.
Changes introduced through Bill C-3 may allow some people born before December 15, 2025 to claim Canadian citizenship through a qualifying family line, depending on their circumstances.
Also remember: a citizenship certificate and a Canadian passport are separate applications. In most cases, you will need proof of citizenship before applying for a Canadian passport.
Follow AMN Immigration for updates on Canadian citizenship, Bill C-3, processing times, and citizenship by descent.

Quebec is considering major changes to its immigration levels, with new proposals that could significantly affect temporary residents, international students, foreign workers, and future permanent residents.
According to Business Standard, the incoming Parti Québécois government has proposed reducing Quebec’s temporary resident population from more than 500,000 to between 250,000 and 300,000 over its mandate. The plan also includes reducing Temporary Foreign Worker Program numbers to about 40,000 and lowering international student numbers to around 50,000.
The proposals also include reducing annual permanent immigration admissions from 45,000 to 35,000 and placing greater emphasis on French-language proficiency for newcomers.
These measures could have a major impact on people planning to study, work, or settle in Quebec, especially applicants applying from outside the province.
Important: these are proposals and are not yet in force. Quebec’s next annual immigration plan, expected after the National Assembly resumes in November, may provide more details on how and when any changes could be implemented.
If you are planning to study, work, or apply for permanent residence in Quebec, now is a good time to review your options and monitor upcoming policy updates closely.

Canada’s 2026 International Experience Canada season is approaching its final round of invitations.
IRCC has confirmed that the last invitation round for all remaining IEC candidate pools will take place during the week of October 19, 2026.
Eligible candidates who want to be considered for the 2026 season must submit their IEC profile before 9:00 a.m. Eastern Time on October 19, 2026.
Already received an invitation? You can still complete and submit your work permit application after the IEC season closes.
Already started your application? You can continue working on it and submit it within the applicable deadline.
Important for Indian citizens: India is not currently included among countries with a standard youth mobility agreement under IEC. This means Indian citizens are generally not eligible through the regular country-based IEC pools. In limited situations, eligibility through a recognized organization may be possible.
If you are considering IEC, review your eligibility and deadlines carefully before the 2026 season closes.
Follow AMN Immigration for the latest updates on IEC, Canadian work permits, and temporary residence programs.

Can a Part-Time PSW Job Help Your Spouse Qualify for an Open Work Permit in Canada?
Working part-time as a Personal Support Worker (PSW) in Canada and wondering whether your spouse can apply for a Spousal Open Work Permit (SOWP)?
The answer depends on more than just your job title!
Under IRCC’s current eligibility rules, certain foreign workers employed in eligible TEER 2 or TEER 3 occupations may be able to support their spouse’s open work permit application.
Here are some important factors to consider:
1. NOC Classification: PSW positions may fall under different NOC codes depending on actual job duties and work settings. Eligibility depends on the applicable NOC.
2. Part-Time Employment: Working part-time does not automatically make your spouse ineligible. Your employment must meet the relevant IRCC requirements.
3. Work Permit Validity: For eligible high-skilled workers under the January 2025 rules, the principal worker generally needs at least 16 months remaining on their work authorization when the spouse applies.
4. Supporting Documents: Employment letters, recent pay slips, proof of work authorization, and marriage documents can help establish eligibility.
Important: Not every PSW position qualifies. IRCC assesses eligibility based on the worker’s occupation, immigration status, and applicable spousal work permit criteria.
Before applying, ensure your employment and immigration documents support the requirements.

IRCC’s P1 Rain: More PR Applicants Receiving Portal Requests!
Canadian permanent residence applicants are reporting a wave of Portal 1 (P1) emails, bringing encouraging news for those awaiting the final stages of their PR applications.
What does a P1 email mean?
P1 is an important step in IRCC’s permanent residence confirmation process for applicants inside Canada. It requests basic information before applicants proceed to the next stage.
What happens after P1?
1. Portal 1 (P1): Respond to IRCC’s email with the requested details.
2. Portal 2 (P2): Receive instructions to access the PR Confirmation Portal and confirm your presence in Canada.
3. eCOPR: Receive your electronic Confirmation of Permanent Residence once IRCC completes the confirmation process.
Why are some applicants receiving P1 while others are still waiting?
Portal invitations may arrive at different times depending on individual application processing and administrative steps. A wave of emails does not necessarily mean every pending applicant will receive one immediately.
Final Decision Updated but No P1 Email?
Check your inbox and spam folder, verify your contact details, and monitor your application. A final decision update does not necessarily mean the portal email will arrive the same day.
Important: Receiving P1 does not mean you have officially become a permanent resident. Your PR status must still be formally confirmed.
