TORONTO STAR: It’s a sentiment echoed by defence lawyer Arij Riahi, who acted in the Milton case.
“These types of negotiations are how the majority of criminal cases are dealt with in Canada; the system does not have the capacity to hold trials for all arrests,” she said.
“Without the stability of the joint submissions, criminal defence lawyers have no incentives to negotiate a guilty plea in a file and should instead take their chances at trial.”
Two Ontario judges, sitting in Milton and Toronto, recently expressed concern that the joint proposals for sentencing in auto theft cases were too lenient.
