4 THINGS THAT MAKE YOUR HOME LOOK MORE EXPENSIVE WITHOUT COSTING THOUSANDS.
Want your home to feel warmer, more polished and more expensive? Before you start renovating, look at these four things:
1. FIX THE LIGHTING.
I see what I affectionately call “the trifecta” all the time—especially above bathroom vanities: one cool-white bulb, one warm bulb…and one burnt out.
Lighting should be consistent throughout a space. Match the colour temperature of your bulbs, including lamps and ceiling fixtures. I generally prefer warm, natural-looking light around 3000–3500K. It’s amazing how much more cohesive a home feels when the lighting isn’t fighting with itself.
2. BUY A BIGGER RUG.
Please. I beg you.
One of the fastest ways to make an otherwise beautiful room look less expensive is to float a little rug in the middle of it.
People often choose small rugs when selling because they want to “show off the floors.” You can still see the floors! A properly sized rug actually makes a room feel larger, more intentional and more luxurious.
My minimum rule: the front legs of the sofa and chairs should sit ON the rug. In many living rooms, that means an 8' × 10' or 9' × 12' rug—not a 5' × 7' island floating under the coffee table. And to be honest, I like ALL legs on the furniture if the room can support it. YES we want to see the lovely hardwood, but not every inch of it.
3. HANG YOUR CURTAINS HIGH AND FULL.
Mount the rod close to the ceiling rather than just above the window. Let the curtains skim the floor. And use enough fabric that they still look generous when closed.
High, full-length curtains draw the eye upward, make ceilings feel taller and windows feel larger. Two skinny panels stretched within an inch of their lives do exactly the opposite.
4. GO BIGGER WITH YOUR ART. 🖼️
Tiny art on a big wall rarely looks intentional.
Choose pieces that are appropriately scaled to the wall and furniture beneath them. Over a sofa, console or headboard, I generally aim for art that's roughly 2/3 the width of the furniture, and on a bare wall, hang it so the centre is around 57 inches from the floor.
None of these changes is particularly expensive.
But scale, proportion, consistency and placement are some of the things that separate a room that simply has nice things from a room that LOOKS expensive.
And sometimes the answer really is: buy the bigger one.

On this rainy morning I’m putting together September meal kits. On the menu today is Chicken and Corn Chowder using shelf stable ingredients. And I’m happy to say that we’re on track to beat the goal I set in January to provide 600 shelf stable meals this year. September’s kits will put us at 556, and there are still 3 months to go! That means we will end the year around 775!

I know putting together 12 kits a month isn’t doable for everyone. But if you want to put even one meal kit together it can really help. The LAST thing a parent who is facing crisis wants to do, is think about what they can actually make with food bank finds. That’s feedback I’ve received over and over in response to these kits. They contain everything needed to make a warm, comforting meal.
