MYTH: Adding an in-law suite automatically solves the ageing-in-place problem.

It might be a fantastic solution.

Waterloo is making additional residential units easier as part of its housing planning, and they can create some really interesting possibilities:

Adult child nearby.
Caregiver space.
Intergenerational living.
Rental income.
More support while maintaining privacy.

But here's the question I'd ask first:

What problem are we actually solving?

If the house is too much to maintain...

The yard is exhausting...
The neighbourhood requires driving everywhere...
Or you simply don't WANT the responsibility anymore...

Adding another unit doesn't magically fix those things.

Sometimes renovating is the answer.
Sometimes right-sizing is.
Sometimes doing absolutely nothing is.

The smartest decision starts with the problem—not the solution somebody saw on HGTV.

Considering a suite versus a move? Start by writing down the three things that aren't working now. Then let's see which option actually fixes them.

“No mortgage” and “cheap to live in” are not the same thing.

A larger detached home still comes with taxes, utilities, insurance, landscaping, repairs—and the appliance that waits until 4:52 p.m. on a holiday Friday to die. Because appliances are as****es. 😂

But a condo isn’t automatically cheaper either. Purchase price, fees, taxes and moving costs all matter.

There is no universal answer.

The useful comparison is: What does my current lifestyle actually cost—and what would the alternative cost?

Put both on paper. Then decide whether the move makes financial sense.

Well, it’s official… I’ve been promoted to GRANDMA! 🩷☕️

On October 14th at 6:44 PM, our hearts grew by 7 lbs, 11 oz when our beautiful granddaughter, Aubrey Eleanor, made her entrance into the world. 🎀

Our first grandchild. A whole new kind of love. And a tiny little person who already has us completely wrapped around her finger.

I knew becoming a grandma would be special… but I don’t think anything could have prepared me for just how much love one little girl could bring.

Welcome to the world, sweet Aubrey Eleanor. You are already loved beyond words. 💕

Let the Grandma era begin! 🥹🩷

Love it. Love it. Hate it.

Honestly? I love it—because Market Orientation isn’t necessarily about finding the house. It’s about gathering information before you make any big decisions.

We look at condos, bungalows, townhouses or smaller detached homes. Then I listen:

Too dark. Too small. Where would Kevin put all his stuff? Okay… THIS kitchen works. Wait—I thought I wanted a condo, but apparently I don’t. 😂

Excellent.

Every NO gets us closer to understanding what your actual YES looks like.

Nobody needs to buy anything. Nobody needs to sell anything. We’re simply replacing assumptions with information—and that makes the eventual decision dramatically easier.

There’s an enormous difference between choosing your next home and needing your next home.

When you’re choosing, you can explore neighbourhoods, compare condos and bungalows, wait for the right property—or decide you’re perfectly happy staying put.

When a health issue, mobility change or family crisis makes the decision, those options can shrink very quickly.

That’s why the best right-sizing conversations happen before they’re necessary.

Not because everyone should move—but because if moving eventually makes sense, you deserve to make that decision while you’re fully in control.

If you’ve been saying “maybe in five years,” comment FIVE YEARS. We’ll start with information, not a listing agreement.

I would take the ugly kitchen in the right Waterloo neighbourhood.

There.

I said it.

Because I can change:

Counters.
Cupboards.
Flooring.
Paint.
Lighting.

I cannot renovate:
Where your friends live.
Where you buy groceries.
How far you are from your kids.
Whether you can walk somewhere useful.
Whether the nearest trail is two blocks away or a 15-minute drive.

Whether every single outing requires getting into the car.

When you're right-sizing, I think it's really easy to fall in love with the house and forget you're also choosing your next daily routine.

That's backwards.

I'd rather find the right life first.
Then fix the damn backsplash.

If you had to choose: PERFECT HOUSE / PERFECT LOCATION?

I wish I could say I move furniture because I have a grand design vision.

Usually, I just look at a room and think, “What if the sofa lived over there?” And apparently that requires moving the chair, table, lamp and rug—and dragging something unnecessarily heavy three feet.

The result is always one of two things:

1. Genius.
2. Put it all back immediately.

But I love discovering how the same room and the same furniture can feel completely different. It’s probably why right-sizing fascinates me too.

Sometimes you don’t need more space. You need to look at the space you already have differently.

And sometimes you need to stop moving the damn chair. I’m still working on that part.

Your house can be perfectly “age-friendly” and your neighbourhood can still trap you in it.

Main-floor bedroom.
Walk-in shower.
No stairs.
Wide doors.
Excellent.

But then...

Groceries are a 12-minute drive.
The doctor is across town.
You can't comfortably walk anywhere useful.
Transit isn't convenient.

And every coffee, appointment, errand and social outing starts with:
Where are my keys?

That's the part of ageing in place we don't talk about enough.

We focus on the HOUSE.
Grab bars.
Stairs.
Bathrooms.

But independence also happens outside your front door.

For some people, staying in the family home will absolutely remain the right answer.

For others, moving five or ten kilometres could actually make their world bigger, not smaller.

That's a very different definition of downsizing.

If you're evaluating whether your current home works long-term, evaluate the location too.
