Dear Neighbours,

Here begins a new chapter in my life which also has opened up a new chapter for the whole Rohingya community all over the world, and in fact, it is a new chapter for the entire Burmese community in Diaspora. And that is, I am running for city councillor for Ward 6 in Kitchener in this upcoming election.

Although tens of thousands of Rohingya have been resettled in the West during the last two decades or so, and hundreds of thousands of other ethnic groups from Burma have been resettled all over the world who could escape persecution of successive Burmese regimes. There are professors, engineers, doctors, masters degree and Ph D holders, highly successful business people all over the world among the Burmese diaspora, but no one has ever attempted to run for an office anywhere.

In one way or another, each of us thinks that "we are unqualified, unable, won't be accepted, etc." With the encouragement of many members in the community and my neighbors, I registered for the nomination at the last minute and started to campaign by canvassing the area and talking with the households in the community. The acceptance, encouragements, and outpouring supports that I receive during the canvassing is humbling.

That news has spread out like wildfire all over the world among the Burmese diaspora, Rohingyas and non-Rohingya alike. Most of their first reactions are similar, "Wow, this is awesome. It opens up our eyes," as if they just woke up from an awesome dream. Some others reacted as if they lost something for a long time. "Man.....what were we doing? Why didn’t we think of this for so long?". A young girl from the community was saying to my wife while canvassing, "Wow! I really did not know that our people could vote here. Now I came to know that we can also run for office. I will do that one day." That in itself is a success for me.

My community is extremely proud and supportive. Men, women and even children join me in canvassing the community. It's quite a humbling journey for me to see such an outpouring of support from my community here, and moral support from the Rohingyas from various other countries. I think the Ward-6 people deserve to know about it. I am not a career politician. I am a genocide survivor who has deeper understanding of "ostracized" and "ignored" communities.

I have years of experience in grassroot level work and how to uplift them. I appreciate the new freedom I have in Canada more than any Canadian-born would. I would do anything that is needed to make the community better and establish better governance at the City.

Since I have already been doing a lot of community work, I can do it better and in a much greater scale if I am in the office and have access to city’s resources. Thus your support in this new chapter of my life is crucial to be able to enhance what I have already been doing.

With Respect and humility!

Ward 6 City Councillor, Kitchener, 2022 Municipal Election, Anwar Arkani

If you think your issues were not properly addressed? Street that you are living on is not maintained? You are concern for your children safety because of the speeders, breakings in are more often, and a lot of issues and questions unanswered? These are the signs that your representative at the city is not working for you. It's time for a change in the administration.
