Did you know the 9-5 work day was first introduced in 1920 by the Ford Motor Company and then standardized by labour legislation in 1938? At that time, it was considered progressive because it limited factory working hours for employees and was also productive for employers who could begin to rely on certain outputs per hour or per day.
For the last decade, it appears that more companies and industry giants are turning to alternative and even more progressive policies in the work place. Results-only work environments (ROWE), by contrast, allow employees the freedom to choose when, where and how they work as long as they meet the measurable expectations set by the employer. The COVID-19 pandemic has shaken things up and has ushered in a new wave of ROWE workplaces. Employees may be more engaged and have greater overall satisfaction from the flexibility and control they have over their work schedule. This could be a way to attract top talent amidst the ongoing staffing shortage.
