The readers have spoken! One more column about the “stuff” of your estate. The focus so far has been on items that are precious to your children; allocating them before you die to avoid the conflict likely to arise when your children sort it out after you’re gone. One reader shared that her mo...

Discussing how to deal with items of both high sentimental value as well as high dollar value Welcome to the fourth of a series about the “stuff” of your estate. My pace has been glacial. I’ve gotten only so far as to discuss the allocation of items of sentimental value and whether those alloc...

After beating around the bush for two weeks, I’m finally going to answer the question: Should your allocation of items between your children, i.e. who gets what when you die, be in a codicil? The first part of the question was whether allocations should be made in the first place. Or should that b...

Welcome to the 2nd of a growing series of columns about “the stuff” of your estate. I started down this path because of a reader question about whether items of sentimental value should be allocated to beneficiaries while you’re alive, and whether those allocations should be set out in a codic...

Wills say how the “residue of the estate” will be divided between beneficiaries. I only rarely see mention of items of significant sentimental or financial value. A reader recently posed this question: “I have a will that leaves 1/3 of my estate to each of my three children. I’m wondering ab...

A new estate file has come across my desk where the generous deceased, I’ll call her Kim, left some of her estate to “the West Kelowna Fire Hall for use to help with wildfire support”. It wasn’t a do-it-yourself will. Kim paid a lawyer or notary to prepare it. I’m not going to disclose who...
