Going through a divorce can be tough, but understanding the process can help. In Canada, a divorce must be granted by a court. Before applying to the court for a divorce, the most highly relied upon ground for a divorce is that spouses must have been separated for at least one year.

It is most beneficial, and far less costly, to resolve important issues such as parenting, support, and property division before applying for a divorce.

While you do not need a lawyer, it is highly recommended to ensure that you understand your rights and obligations. Remember, navigating the divorce process can be complex, so don't hesitate to seek professional advice.

It's essential that this private contract is in writing, properly witnessed, and covers important issues such as parenting, support, and property division. While legal representation is not strictly required, it is strongly recommended to avoid potential legal issues, including being set aside by the courts.
