❄️ Understanding the Science: The Lake Huron "Fetch" Engine 🌨️
Ever wonder why Grey and Bruce counties consistently see some of the biggest snowfalls in North America?
It all comes down to a powerful local meteorological phenomenon known as the Lake Huron "Fetch" Engine.
When winter storms roll in, here is what’s happening behind the scenes:
1️⃣ Cold Air Over Warm Water: As freezing arctic air masses sweep across the unfrozen, relatively warm waters of Lake Huron and Georgian Bay, the air absorbs massive amounts of heat and moisture from the lake's surface. The distance the wind travels over open water is known as the "fetch"—and a long fetch means maximum moisture pickup.
2️⃣ Rapid Cloud Development: This heated, moisture-laden air becomes unstable and rises, condensing into towering cloud bands filled with ice crystals and snow.
3️⃣ The Escarpment Lift: As the wind pushes these bands inland, they collide with the rising elevation of our terrain and the Niagara Escarpment. This forced upward lift (orographic lifting) rapidly cools the air further.
4️⃣ Intense Snow Squalls: The result is persistent, narrow bands of heavy snow squalls that dump massive amounts of snow over targeted areas in very short periods.
