Sign me up! Can I vote for you now? Can I help with your campaign? Can we devise a public awareness strategy to bring forward all that you have clearly laid out for us?

I’ve written a letter, I’m so done with this!!!
Please everyone, please write in to your councillors, the mayor! All of them.

This was all I could pull from our video. I work from home and sit the backyard at lunch. The exchange was not pretty between he and I, as scared as I was.

Good Afternoon,

Well, it’s not really a good afternoon as I was approached by a trespasser in my backyard. I’m female and was home alone, I’m not a petite individual yet I felt compromised and afraid, however unwilling to step down I yelled at the trespasser to get off my property.

Not to make assumptions, yet I would hazard a guess based on his dishevelled appearance and his backpack he is one of the ever increasing local encampment people that have taken hold of Strachan and James Street North. An area that I will not walk in alone any longer, the gateway to our waterfront which is now no longer safe for the residents that reside here or the guests to our city that are visiting the Pier.

How would you feel if you were home alone and someone approached you in your backyard in the middle of the day, broad daylight?
How would YOU FEEL?

When is this problem going to be resolved? When are we going to feel safe again? When will a rule of law be upheld in our city? Right now I feel as if Hamilton has no leadership and nothing is being done, I don’t feel that there is anyone there to protect our rights as the tax paying citizens but the people living in encampments, trespassing on our properties, stealing from us….. right now I feel like they have all the rights. I am not alone in this, I am not the only one that feels unsafe in their own home, in their own backyard and in their own neighbourhood.

Where is the accountability, where are the answers for this problem?

I would appreciate a response AND some answers to this ongoing, ever increasing problem.

Regards,
Melissa Vass Scott

I personally feel the City of Hamilton should follow the model of a designated area similar to that of Waterloo’s tiny cabins.

Our mayor, Andrea Horwath has declared Hamilton as having an “opioid crisis” yet is willing to offer a continued “safe supply” of narcotics to addicted persons. Seems like a bit of an oxymoron to me.

If they are going to continue to offer this “safe supply” of drugs I feel it’s wrong to allow it in parks and public spaces under the guise of Human Rights and lack of housing. We are subjected to nudity, blatant drug use, psychotic episodes, people stealing from our backyards and the general milieu of garbage being left as individuals vacate areas to move on to the next location.

This is not about the haves and have nots, this is about community and right from wrong. I think it’s unfair for young children to have to normalize this situation amd be exposed to the constant drug use that is happening on a regular basis.

Pick a designated area that can house these tents en masse and get on with it. What about our most vulnerable and innocent - OUR CHILDREN !! Move the tent encampments to an area similar to Waterloo. We all have rules in a community, there should be no exception whether you are housed or not, we need to follow them or there will eventually be complete chaos.

49 signatures are still needed! Stop encampments in our tax paid Hamilton Family Parks

Well wouldn’t that be a positive step forward!

The City of Hamilton never ceases to amaze me in their directionless approach to moving forward.

They have waffled on almost every turn towards progression and development. It’s truly maddening to watch this gem of a place lay in stasis while nothing gets done.

Why, when we have these units available, do we have a homeless encampment issue?

Is it really that difficult to renovate these units? If this was private industry time equates to money lost which would never happen. An expeditious and fiscally responsible approach is how industry profits which enables future growth going forward.

It’s time this city gets on with it!

CHCH News has learned more than 100 units are vacant in a downtown CityHousing Hamilton apartment block at Jackson and Hess Streets.
