Yesterday CBC's "The Current" had an excellent segment about how pensioners need better protection when a company goes bankrupt. Better legislation is needed to ensure that pension plans are first in line to ensure that pension promises (deferred wages) are paid out ahead of banks and government. The NDP has put this legislation forward, but the Liberals (like the Conservatives when the NDP previously brought this issue forward) are not currently interested.

"...Wages are protected, unfunded pensions are essentially just a deferred wage that need to be protected too," Wanda Morris.

The quote above perfectly sums up the inherent unfairness of having pension plans at the back of the line. Pension plans are deferred wages - if you weren't in a pension plan you would be paid more today - you are sacrificing today's wage for a secure future. They should be protected like any other wage when a company goes into bankruptcy.

Advocates for retirees are pushing for legislative change as Sears Canada's bankruptcy is once again leaving pensioners still fighting for payout.
