I used to teach officers how to use speed-measuring equipment.

Which means I spent a lot of time explaining the conditions under which it gives you a number you can rely on - and the conditions under which it doesn't.

Calibration records. The angle the device was held at. Weather, traffic, what else was in the beam. All of it matters, and all of it is the kind of thing that either shows up properly in the file or doesn't.

Most drivers never ask about any of it. Not because they're careless - because nobody tells them these are questions you're allowed to ask.

I know what the answers are supposed to look like. I taught them.

Every ticket comes with a disclosure package. The officer’s notes. The equipment records. The observations that were written down at the roadside, sometimes hours later. That’s the case against you, and you’re entitled to see all of it before you decide anything.

Almost nobody asks for it. Nobody at the payment counter mentions it exists.

For $97 I read every page. I spent years writing these notes myself, and I trained officers on the equipment behind a lot of these tickets. I know what a solid file looks like and I know what a thin one looks like.

Sometimes I tell people their ticket is clean and they should pay it. That’s a $97 answer worth having too.

For most drivers a ticket is a fine and an annoyance.

If you run trucks, it's a different object entirely.

A paid ticket is a conviction. Convictions land on your Carrier Profile with points assigned by severity. Those points feed your Risk Factor score, and that score feeds your Safety Fitness Rating. Let it slide far enough and you're looking at an NSC audit - and at the bottom of that ladder, your Safety Fitness Certificate itself.

Here's the part small operators get hit hardest by: conviction points are measured per vehicle. Ten convictions across an eighty-truck fleet barely registers. The same ten across a twelve-truck operation is a serious problem.

And your carrier profile has a public version. Anyone can request it. Including your customers.

Call before your drivers pay anything.

"It's just a ticket."
I hear that sentence almost every day.
Usually from someone who's already paid it.
Here's what "just a ticket" actually means once it's paid.
A conviction on your driving record.
Demerit points against your licence.
An insurance premium that gets re-rated at renewal, months later, when you've stopped connecting it to the traffic stop that caused it.
And if you drive for a living - if your licence is the thing that lets you earn - that ticket is sitting a lot closer to your income than you think.
Nothing about that is "just."
Look at what's in the file before you decide anything. That conversation costs you nothing.

Edition 5 of why people f*cking hate cops!!! Please don’t get tricked.

Calgary Police recently posted on FB that they caught someone doing 99 in a 50 (see below).

They then discuss how big the fine is and tell everyone the driver was charged with speeding and Careless Driving.

This is horribly f*cking misleading.

The cops can’t have both charges.

I’m not a lawyer so I can’t give legal advice, but here is the personal opinion of our team.

You can’t use one charge as proof of another charge.

If this person pleads guilty to the speed, then the only evidence for the Careless charge would be that this person drove through a construction zone. No speed alleged (because it’s already been used for the speeding charge).

It’s called the Kienapple Principle. Look it up.

This is absolute bullying by the Police, and as cops always say in traffic court “ignorance of the law is not a defence”.

Same goes for stupid, bullying cops. Either they know what they are doing is wrong, or they don’t know the law - which is worse?

The worst part is this person will likely plead guilty online to both charges, without ever knowing they are getting screwed.

Please people, don’t get f*cked over like this.

(And as a side note, speeding doesn’t reduce your reaction time. Your reaction time is how long it takes you to notice there is a problem and then make a decision as to what to do about it. Add that together and that’s your reaction time. The standard person is around 1 second when driving.
Your time to react is how long you have to react before it’s too late).

Why shopping local matters when fighting a traffic ticket (and it really does).

Here is a hypothetical.

A person gets a cellphone ticket and court is for Grande Prairie.

They call around, likely looking for the best price.

They end up hiring a business that is in Calgary. They don’t have an office in Grande Prairie. They don’t have an agent who is local to appear in court for them. Ask them where their agent is based out of (you can always call us to confirm).

They are going to try to handle the ticket remotely to “get a deal”. But how good is that deal going to be?

The prosecutor knows the agent is down in Calgary. They know the agent won’t drive 7 hours for a trial. And you haven’t paid them for 14 hours of travel either.

Do you honestly think the prosecutor is going to give them the best possible “deal”, when they know the agent won’t come to run a trial (and likely doesn’t know how to run a trial)?

They are likely going to say “no deal”.

Now the agent is pleading guilty, keeping your money, and telling you that they tried everything they could. All because you just wanted “the cheapest price”.

If a prosecutor refuses us, we are there in person and we run the trial. And they know it. Now it’s a whole different negotiation. Do they really want to take up a large portion of the day with our trial. Likely not (and experiences have shown this to be true).

We have more trial capable agents than anyone else in Western Canada. Combined we’ve run thousands of trials and negotiated tens of thousands of tickets.

If you aren’t going to hire us, that’s fine. Go with whom you feel most comfortable with.

But shop local, it does make a difference.
