Full time employment opportunity with MLSN Eskasoni Office - Victim Support Service Worker
Mi’kmaw Legal Support Network is a community based Aboriginal justice initiative for aboriginal People in Nova Scotia in conflict with the law.
Position: Victim Support Worker
Location: Eskasoni office covering Cape Breton First Nation communities
General Description: The Mi’kmaw Victim Support Service Program will provide Mi’kmaq/Aboriginal victims and witnesses of serious crime with information and assistance throughout the court process to enhance their understanding of and participation in the criminal justice system. In close cooperation with other available programs and Victim Services the VSS will assist with referrals for safety planning and counselling services in the community, arranging appointments with the Crown, courtroom tours for victims, preparation for testifying in court, assistance with preparation of Victim Impact Statements, applications to the Criminal Injuries Compensation Board, advocacy for victims' rights, public education and training, court accompaniment.
Specific Requirements:
University degree or equivalent required
Mi’kmaq language preferred
Experience working in a Social Service field Knowledge and familiarity with Mi’kmaq culture and communities.
Knowledge of Mi’kmaq Legal support Network and other Aboriginal Justice Programs
In-depth understanding of intimate partner violence dynamics and the effects of victimization
A high level of judgment, independent decision-making and discretion
Knowledge of the criminal justice system, community resources and relevant legislation.
Must possess good communication skills and public speaking skills
Computer skills required
Must posses valid Nova Scotia Driver’s license and have access to a vehicle.
Must pass Criminal Record Screening and Child Abuse Register

General Description:
The caseworker is responsible for case management and delivery of the Mi’kmaw Customary Law Program, working with Indigenous and Mi’kmaq communities to find meaningful and culturally
appropriate ways to hold the wrongdoer accountable. The caseworker will be responsible for the organization and delivery of Justice Circles, management of legal documentation and client supervision. Will work independently and be familiar with mediation and conflict resolution techniques. Must be able to facilitate group discussions and encourage individuals to express emotions and feelings. This individual must maintain a strong community focus and be involved in all aspects of MLSN outreach.
