MLSN is looking to hire a caseworker to deliver the Mi'kmaq Customary Law Program covering: Cape Breton Island and surrounding areas.

Requirements:
University degree preferred
Mi’kmaq language preferred
Knowledge and familiarity with Mi’kmaq culture and communities
Knowledge of Mi’kmaw Legal Support Network and other Indigenous Justice Programs
Ability to work with families and youth in crisis
Must possess good communication and public speaking skills
Computer skills required
Must possess a valid Nova Scotia Driver’s license and have access to a vehicle (Travel is covered)
Must pass Criminal Record Screening and Child Abuse Register
Two references

General Description:
The caseworker is responsible for case management and delivery of the Mi’kmaw Customary Law Program, working with Indigenous and Mi’kmaq communities to find meaningful and culturally appropriate ways to hold the wrongdoer accountable. The caseworker will be responsible for the organization and delivery of Justice Circles, management of legal documentation and client supervision. Will work independently and be familiar with mediation and conflict resolution techniques. Must be able to facilitate group discussions and encourage individuals to express emotions and feelings. This individual must maintain a strong community focus and be involved in all aspects of MLSN outreach.

The Mi’kmaw Customary Law Program (MCLP) Assistant will provide primary administrative support to the MCLP program and special projects, including management of data collection, intake and file assignment. This individual works closely with the MCLP Case Workers to provide administrative support.

General duties:
· Act as initial point of contact for MCLP by responding to inquiries and requests or information as appropriate.
· Provide information regarding programs, courses, policies, and procedures to internal and external contacts.
· Ensure internal and external mail/faxes are distributed and recorded.
· Assist others with use of various office equipment and software programs.
· Maintain MCLP filing systems and ensure that records are properly coded and archived.
· Coordinate program deliverables
· Ensure that proper security procedures are followed in closing of office each day.
· Oversees MCLP intake process and file closures
· Assists Caseworkers with Circles as needed
· Oversee scheduling and bookings for MLCP.
· Record restitution and donations
· Maintain updated client list for Case Workers
· Provide client updates to authorized agencies and police

Full time employment opportunity with MLSN Eskasoni Office - Victim Support Service Worker
Mi’kmaw Legal Support Network is a community based Aboriginal justice initiative for aboriginal People in Nova Scotia in conflict with the law.
Position: Victim Support Worker
Location: Eskasoni office covering Cape Breton First Nation communities
General Description: The Mi’kmaw Victim Support Service Program will provide Mi’kmaq/Aboriginal victims and witnesses of serious crime with information and assistance throughout the court process to enhance their understanding of and participation in the criminal justice system. In close cooperation with other available programs and Victim Services the VSS will assist with referrals for safety planning and counselling services in the community, arranging appointments with the Crown, courtroom tours for victims, preparation for testifying in court, assistance with preparation of Victim Impact Statements, applications to the Criminal Injuries Compensation Board, advocacy for victims' rights, public education and training, court accompaniment.
Specific Requirements:
University degree or equivalent required
Mi’kmaq language preferred
Experience working in a Social Service field Knowledge and familiarity with Mi’kmaq culture and communities.
Knowledge of Mi’kmaq Legal support Network and other Aboriginal Justice Programs
In-depth understanding of intimate partner violence dynamics and the effects of victimization
A high level of judgment, independent decision-making and discretion
Knowledge of the criminal justice system, community resources and relevant legislation.
Must possess good communication skills and public speaking skills
Computer skills required
Must posses valid Nova Scotia Driver’s license and have access to a vehicle.
Must pass Criminal Record Screening and Child Abuse Register
