Effective September 1, 2026, single applicants must demonstrate $23,448 in available funds for living expenses, excluding tuition and transportation costs. The required amounts scale higher for accompanying family members, reaching $35,888 for a family of three. Applicants must provide clear documentation showing available funds for their first year of study, alongside a viable financial plan for longer programs. Acceptable proof includes Canadian bank accounts, Guaranteed Investment Certificates, recent bank statements, and official sponsorship letters.

Alberta released the results of the two new immigration draws that the province conducted under the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP). On August 14, 2026, the AAIP invited 743 Alberta Opportunity Stream candidates who had a minimum score of 58. Additionally, the province issued invitations to 24 non-Express Entry candidates under the Dedicated Health Care Pathway. The cut-off score for this draw was 60 points. In total, the AAIP invited 767 candidates in this invitation rounds. So far, Alberta has invited 11,585 candidates through the AAIP streams in 2026.

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has updated its operational instructions regarding Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) review procedures under the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP). IRCC has extended the grace period for work permit extension applications requiring concurrent processing from 60 days to 90 days. Under this policy, eligible extension applications submitted without an LMIA will not receive a final decision until 90 days have elapsed from the receipt date. Additionally, IRCC implemented a new client process allowing applicants to explicitly identify when their files require concurrent processing.

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) updated its processing metrics through June 30, 2026. The data shows 162,020 new citizens welcomed, while 326,190 grant applications remain pending. For permanent residence, IRCC finalized 141,105 economic applications, 54,520 family applications, and 55,295 protection applications. Across permanent streams, 23% to 45% of pending files are waitlisted awaiting space under annual targets. In temporary residence, IRCC finalized over 1.56 million files, leaving 401,280 pending. Additionally, IRCC launched an initiative to transition up to 33,000 work permit holders to permanent residency in 2026 and 2027.

The Government of Canada issued 442 Invitations to Apply (ITAs), and the round’s cut-off score was 760 points, 8 points fewer than the previous PNP-targeted draw. The tie-breaking rule for this round was August 07, 2026, at 18:01:56 UTC. As of August 16, there were 226,859 profiles registered in the Express Entry pool. The Ontario Government has updated regulations for Ontario Works and the Ontario Disability Support Program to restrict financial support to legal Canadian residents. Effective immediately, the amended rules under the Ontario Works Act and the Ontario Disability Support Program Act exclude individuals residing in Canada without legal status. Temporary residents, including international students, temporary workers, and tourists, are also ineligible for these social assistance benefits. Provincial officials stated that these legislative changes aim to protect public funds and preserve social assistance resources for vulnerable residents and families who meet legal residency requirements.

Alberta released the results of the recent Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP) immigration draws. From August 4 to August 12, the province invited 367 candidates under five streams. The AAIP invited 50 healthcare candidates under the Alberta Express Entry Stream – Priority Sectors, 95 candidates under the Accelerated Tech Pathway, and 38 candidates under Priority Sectors (agriculture). Additionally, the province issued invitations to 127 candidates under the Rural Renewal Stream and 57 Express Entry candidates under the Dedicated Health Care Pathway. So far, Alberta has invited 10,818 candidates through the AAIP streams in 2026.

On August 10, 2026, Newfoundland and Labrador held the tenth round of selection through the Enhanced Expression of Interest (EOI) system, issuing a total of 208 invitations. Of these, 186 were sent to candidates under the Newfoundland and Labrador Provincial Nominee Program (NLPNP), while 22 went to applicants through the Atlantic Immigration Program (AIP). Last year, Newfoundland and Labrador invited a total of 3,376 applicants under the NLPNP and AIP. So far, the province has invited 2,197 candidates in 2026.
