At my Bar Call in Abuja, Nigeria, in 2003 with the former and late Chief Justice of Nigeria, the Honourable Mohammed Lawal Uwais, CJN. The Chief Justice (as he then was) served from 1995 to 2006 and passed away on June 6, 2025.

I had big dreams for my life, my country men and women in Nigeria and for my homeland.

I have always believed that my law class at the Faculty of Law, University of Lagos or at the Law School, was exceptional and that many of them would have dates and destinies with the future and history of the legal profession, society and Nigeria as whole.

I still believe that to this day.

I join all Albertans, the judiciary, the profession and the entire legal community in mourning the untimely passing of the Chief Justice of Alberta, Chief Justice of the Courts of Appeal of Alberta, of Nunavut and Northwest Territories - The Honourable Ritu Khullar. A significant and heartbreaking loss for Alberta.

Chief Justice Khullar spent more than two decades in private law practice and was highly respected by her colleagues, clients and the profession.

As a former Minister of Justice and Attorney General, I know she carried the weight and burden of the leadership of our judiciary with extraordinary grace, competence and compassion. We see that reflected in her decisions, opinions, relationships with her colleagues, provincial and federal governments, her brother justices of the various levels of our courts and the various organs, institutions and machinery of the state.

A little girl, born in a deep tiny rural Northern Alberta community of Fort Vermilion, she rose through the profession to become a well rounded highly respected jurist, to our provinces highest judicial office. She was principled, a robust and thorough bred intellectual.

I thank her and her family for her many years of dedicated service to the profession, the judiciary and our province.

I offer my heartfelt condolences to her husband, children, extended family, the judiciary and the legal profession.

May she rest in Perfect Peace.

It was my privilege to have made the successful application before my Lord, the Honourable Presiding Justice of the Court of King’s Bench for the admission of the newest member of the Alberta Bar today - my Student-at-Law, Luba Sushko.

It has been an honour to have been Luba’s Principal in the past one year. Like me, Luba is an Internationally Trained Lawyer who was first called and practised law in Ukraine before coming to Canada. Luba obtained a Master’s Degree from Ukraine and another Master’s from Osgoode Hall Law School, York University and her NCA Certificate of Equivalency before the commencement of her Articles of Clerkship.

Luba joined my firm as a student from the Federal Court of Canada and the Federal Court of Appeal where she works a Registry Officer. Prior to working for the federal court, she was a judicial clerk with the Court of King’s Bench.

Having supervised Luba in the past year, I have no doubt that she will represent herself, the Court, the public, her clients and the profession competently, ethically and professionally.

I offer my best wishes and I wholeheartedly welcome her to the legal profession here in Alberta.

I thank her family, friends, colleagues and mentors who supported throughout this process.

I offer my condolences to the family of the Honourable Donald H. Oliver, KC on his passing. He was an excellent lawyer who served his community and the federal Conservative Party with distinction. He was appointed to the Senate of Canada by the late prime minister, The Right Honourable Brian Mulroney.

Don was a trailblazer who pursued the cause justice and equality with vigour and determination. I thank him for his many years of meritorious service to Nova Scotia and Canada.

May he Rest in Perfect Peace.

From Celebrating the Judicial Legacy of one of the finest jurists of our time, The Hon. Russell Brown formerly of the Supreme Court of Canada. To welcoming my mother, sister and brother to Canada, as well as other family members and friends from around the world for a historic celebration. To having three Alberta Justice Ministers in one photograph (perhaps historic as far as I know) to attending the best outdoor event in the world, The Calgary Stampede with my daughters. And finally attending the John Ware Institute Gala at the Calgary Petroleum Club, the months of June and July have been exceedingly rewarding.

I thank the John Ware Institute for all they do to ensure opportunity for all in the corporate boardroom. In particular I thank the founder, Akolisa (Ako) Ufodike PhD FCPA for his leadership.

Remember talents exist everywhere. Second, developing and nurturing relationships and partnerships are important. Third, if we don’t build or do it for ourselves, no one would.
