One of the most common issues I see in estate administration is what I call a “scavenger hunt.” Executors know there are assets, but they have no clear idea where to start.
In my practice, I always encourage clients to put together a simple “Asset Map” for their executors. I’ve seen too many situations where executors are left guessing because no basic information was ever shared.
Your “Asset Map” should at least include:
• Where your accounts are held
• Life insurance policies
• Any foreign accounts
• Private loans you’ve given to others
• Other key financial relationships or assets
A little effort now can save your loved ones a lot of time and stress later
