You’ve been approached about being the executor of a will.
Maybe it’s a parent, a close friend, or another family member asking someone they trust to take on an important role.

Before you say yes, it’s important to understand what being an executor actually involves.

Executors are responsible for handling legal paperwork, dealing with banks and assets, paying debts and taxes, and making sure the estate is distributed properly. It can take months, sometimes longer, and mistakes can create delays or personal liability.

Executor and Power of Attorney. Two important roles with two very different responsibilities.

People often confuse an executor and a power of attorney, but they are quite distinct from one another.

An executor is responsible for handling your estate after you pass away, which includes processes like carrying out the instructions in your will, settling debts, and distributing assets.

A power of attorney, on the other hand, can help manage financial or legal matters during your lifetime, particularly if you’re unable to handle them yourself.

Understanding the difference is an important step in planning ahead and making sure the right people are in place when they’re needed.
