𝐆𝐨𝐨𝐝𝐛𝐲𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐋𝐞𝐧𝐧𝐲, 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐅𝐨𝐠𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐲 𝐋𝐚𝐰 𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐦 𝐦𝐚𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐭
Had to hold off writing this piece for a period to let things settle a bit. Previously, I was never a dog person. I was bitten by dogs as a child. The second time I was still very young (attacked while riding my tricycle) and don’t remember a lot about it except that it really hurt, the police became involved and I had to be seen by a doctor. Also, being allergic to most breeds didn’t contribute to me becoming a fan of canines over the years.
Well, it is now a month since we had to say good bye to our 14 ½ year-old office mascot, Lenny the Yorkshire Terrier, following his rapid decline from kidney disease complications.
Lenny was what is now called a rescue dog, having been left behind by his owners in the autumn of 2021. And he had not matched with two other families before joining Christine and myself. But in reality, it was Lenny who decided to adopt us empty nesters during those still uncertain days of Covid.
It was not long before Lenny became a true companion. He loved to cuddle with Christine during her morning coffee and follow her from place to place. For myself, he was a key calming factor when legal work might hit stress points. For example, Lenny would sit quietly on my lap including during lengthy calls with clients while on Teams.
If Lenny did get restless, he might retreat to his little bed in my office. This tended to occur during somewhat longwinded, online legal seminars! Even then, he still seemed to listen in, as seen in the photo below. All in all, it is not a stretch to say that Lenny was possibly the most informed little pup in all of Canada on our citizenship and immigration law!
I miss my Little Buddy and appreciate much better now what pet owners have to deal with when losing their family companion. Having had these past 4 ½ years with Lenny, I understand well the old saying, “A dog is a man’s best friend.”
PS: A special thanks Dr. Laurie Dunbar DVM, and Rosie Animal Adoption located in Kirkland, QC, for having teamed us up with Lenny.
