Many couples believe that simply living together automatically qualifies them for permanent residence in Canada. But there's more to it than sharing the same address!

Under Canadian immigration rules, a common-law relationship generally requires partners to have lived together in a marriage-like relationship for at least 12 consecutive months.

However, meeting this definition doesn't automatically guarantee PR eligibility.

Here are a few important things to consider:

✅ 12 Months of Cohabitation: You generally need to demonstrate that you've lived together continuously for at least one year.

✅ Proof of Relationship: Joint leases, shared utility bills, financial records, and other supporting documents can help establish your relationship.

✅ Genuine Relationship: Immigration authorities may assess whether your relationship is genuine and meets the applicable requirements.

✅ Immigration Eligibility: Being common-law partners doesn't automatically grant permanent residence. The immigration pathway and eligibility requirements still matter.

Every relationship is unique, and understanding the requirements before applying can help you make informed decisions.

Not sure whether your relationship qualifies as common-law for Canadian immigration?

At Stepwise Immigration, we help you understand the requirements, explore your options, and navigate your immigration journey with greater clarity.

Your Journey. Your Goals. Stepwise Immigration.

09/16/2026

It’s easy to think, “My friend followed this pathway, so maybe I should do the same.” The reality is that immigration decisions depend on much more than someone else’s experience.

Your current status, education, work experience, language results, family circumstances, career goals, and applicable immigration requirements can all influence which pathways may be available to you.

So, listen to experiences. Ask questions. Learn from others. But before making an important immigration decision, make sure you:

✓ Understand your own profile
✓ Review the latest requirements
✓ Explore pathways relevant to your circumstances
✓ Consider your long-term goals
✓ Make an informed decision based on your situation

Immigration isn’t a copy-and-paste process. Two people can take similar steps and still have very different circumstances and outcomes.

Your journey deserves a plan built around you.

Not sure which direction to take?

Receiving an admission offer from a Canadian institution can be exciting—but the offer itself shouldn't be the only reason you choose a program. 🇨🇦

Your program, institution, career objectives, finances, and immigration circumstances can all affect the bigger picture.

Before making a decision, take time to understand what you’re choosing. Ask whether the program supports your long-term career goals, research the institution and location, understand the current study-permit requirements, and consider how the decision fits into your overall plan.

And remember: what worked for a friend, relative, or someone you saw online may not be the right pathway for you.

At Stepwise Immigration Services Ltd., we help clients understand their immigration options and make informed decisions based on their individual circumstances and current requirements.

Don’t choose Canada with guesswork. Choose your next step with clarity.

Thinking about moving to Canada often starts with one big question: “Which immigration pathway is right for me?” 🇨🇦

The answer isn’t the same for everyone.
Depending on your qualifications, work experience, education, family circumstances, immigration history, and long-term goals, you may need to explore different pathways—from studying or working in Canada to family-based options or permanent residence programs.
That’s why choosing a pathway should begin with understanding your individual circumstances, rather than simply following what worked for someone else.
At Stepwise Immigration Services Ltd., we help clients understand their available options, requirements, and next steps so they can approach their Canadian journey with greater clarity and confidence.
Not sure where your journey should begin? Connect with our team to discuss your situation.

For certain prospective Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program (MPNP) candidates, a temporary public policy may provide an opportunity to apply for an open work permit—but specific eligibility requirements apply.

You may qualify if you meet all applicable criteria, including requirements related to your status in Manitoba, MPNP Expression of Interest profile, provincial support letter, and current employment.

An eligible open work permit may allow you to continue working in Manitoba for up to 2 years, giving qualified applicants additional time to build their future in the province.

Immigration policies, deadlines, and individual circumstances can make it difficult to determine whether a pathway applies to you. Stepwise Immigration Services Ltd. can help you understand the requirements and assess your available options.
