Nova Scotia Nurses' Union

Nova Scotia Nurses' Union The Nova Scotia Nurses’ Union is a professional union representing over 8,000 nurses in the province.

The Nova Scotia Nurses’ Union (NSNU) is a professional union representing over 8,000 Licensed Practical Nurses, Registered Nurses and Nurse Practitioners in Nova Scotia hospitals, long term care facilities, adult residential centres and community nursing practices. As a member organization of the Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions, we join with 200,000 nurses and student nurses across Canada, ad

vocating for improved patient care, safe and fair working conditions and the protection of the Canadian healthcare system. The NSNU collaborates with other provincial unions on awareness campaigns, and is also affiliated with the Canadian Labour Congress. Uniquely, the NSNU is the only union in Nova Scotia that exclusively represents nurses, and the only union representing all three nursing designations.

Menstrual Hygiene Day aims to make periods a normal fact of life, where everyone has access to affordable, quality menstrual products, safe and accessible facilities, and supportive menstrual health services — ensuring no one is held back simply because they menstruate.

Currently, more than 500 million women and girls lack the resources and support they need to manage their periods safely and with dignity. These gaps affect education, income opportunities, health and full participation in society, reinforcing inequality around the world.

By donating menstrual health products and encouraging open, stigma-free conversations, we help promote dignity, health and equity for all. At the 2026 AGM, NSNU once again collected dignity items for the Colchester Community Support Centre, working together to improve access to these essential supplies.

Congratulations BCNU!

After more than 50,000 nurses delivered a historic 98.2% YES strike vote mandate, your NBA provincial bargaining committee has reached a tentative agreement with health employers. This tentative agreement would not have been possible without the solidarity and collective action shown by nurses across British Columbia. The strike vote represented one of the strongest demonstrations of member engagement in our union’s history, and it was members coming together that made this possible. The tentative agreement will now move to ratification, giving nurses across the province the opportunity to review and vote on the proposed agreement. More information, including ratification materials, will be shared directly with members in the coming days.

Powered by Compassion is the theme of VON Week 2026. As the week comes to a close, we celebrate our community care nurses practicing in this sector.

The NSNU is proud to represent VON members, nurses who’ve been invested in the well-being of Canadians for 129 years.

Nurse practitioners are a growing workforce working to fill critical gaps in the health care system, and expanding access to nurse practitioners is part of the solution. But we also need sustained investment in public health care, better staffing, and real action to improve access to health care now.

Canada is still facing a persistent nursing shortage, driven in part by retention challenges, heavy workloads and the pressure of excessive overtime. That’s why the Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions (CFNU) is asking the federal government to give nurses a tax break.

The federal government introduced a refundable tax credit for personal support workers in the latest budget. This is the roadmap to give all nurses the tax break they deserve.

It’s important to note not all nurses share the same earning potential or opportunity, and some could be managing financial hardships. Even modest financial relief can make a meaningful difference.

Add your name to the CFNU’s parliamentary petition and support a break for Canada’s Nurses: https://www.ourcommons.ca/petitions/en/Petition/Sign/e-7298

Since this is a parliamentary petition, you’ll need to take one more step to make it official. Take a few seconds to validate your signature in your email.
Thank you to all who have already signed the petition.

That’s a wrap on National Nursing Week 2026 but only the beginning for the many new nurses who graduated this month.

As Nova Scotia’s nursing workforce grows, so does our hope for better, more accessible health care. Who knows, maybe Theo and Finn will follow in the footsteps of their Nanny (NSNU 1st Vice-President Donna Gillis) and Aunt Laura to become nurses❤️.

Thank you to NSNU Locals who shared images and messages this past NNW. NSNU hopes you felt appreciated for your immeasurable contributions.
