⚖️ You won your Small Claims Court case… now what?

Many people are surprised to learn that getting a judgment is only half the battle — the next step is enforcement.

A court order doesn’t automatically mean payment. If the other party doesn’t voluntarily pay, there are legal steps that can be taken to enforce the judgment, including:
💰 Garnishing wages or bank accounts
🏠 Placing a lien on property
📄 Examining the debtor in court to locate assets
⚖️ Taking further enforcement steps through Small Claims Court

This process can feel overwhelming, especially after already going through a hearing or trial — but you don’t have to navigate it alone.

At Small Town Paralegal, we can help you take the next step in enforcing your judgment and actually recovering what you are owed.

Because winning your case should mean something.

Lawyer vs. Paralegal in Ontario ⚖️ What’s the difference?

In Ontario, both lawyers and licensed paralegals are regulated legal professionals—but they serve different roles in the justice system.

A lawyer can represent clients in all areas of law, including criminal matters, family law, immigration, and complex litigation.

A licensed paralegal can represent clients in specific areas such as Small Claims Court, landlord and tenant matters, traffic offences, and certain tribunal proceedings.

Paralegals also often provide a more accessible and affordable legal option, helping clients navigate the legal system without the higher costs typically associated with representation from a lawyer 🤝

Both are valuable—what matters most is choosing the right support for your specific legal issue ⚖️

💼 The reality of running a small business

It’s not just the highlight reel.
Running Small Town Paralegal means I get to do work I care deeply about — helping clients navigate stressful legal situations and standing beside them when they need it most.

But it also means early mornings, late nights, constant learning, paperwork, deadlines, and wearing every hat in the business at once.

Some days feel incredibly fulfilling. Other days feel overwhelming. Most days are a mix of both.

And in between it all, I’m also a mom — juggling school drop-offs, lunches, bedtime routines, and everything in between.

What you see online is often the polished version. The reality is a lot of hard work, consistency, and showing up even when it’s messy.

But I wouldn’t trade it. Because building something of my own — while being present for my family — is worth it.

To anyone else building something from the ground up: I see you 🤍

⚖️ What evidence wins in Small Claims Court?

When people think about court, they often imagine dramatic testimony — but in reality, documents and clear proof are what usually win cases.

Here are some of the most important types of evidence in Small Claims Court:

📄 Written agreements or contracts
If the dispute involves a contract, the written agreement is often the most important piece of evidence.

💬 Messages and emails
Texts, emails, and messages can show what was agreed to, timelines, and communication between the parties.

🧾 Receipts and invoices
These prove payments made, money owed, or the value of goods or services.

📸 Photos and videos
Visual evidence can help show damage, conditions, or what actually happened.

👥 Witness testimony
A witness who saw or heard something relevant can support your version of events.

📌 The key is not just having evidence — it’s having organized, clear evidence that directly supports your claim.

Small Claims Court often comes down to one question:
Who has the better proof?

📄 The importance of contracts

Many legal disputes start the same way:
“...but we had an agreement.”

The problem is that verbal agreements and unclear terms can quickly turn into misunderstandings, unpaid work, or broken expectations.

A contract helps protect everyone involved by clearly setting out:
• What each party is responsible for
• Payment terms
• Timelines and expectations
• What happens if something goes wrong

Having things in writing doesn’t mean you don’t trust the other person — it simply means everyone understands the agreement from the start.

In Ontario, a paralegal can help by:
⚖️ Preparing and reviewing contracts before you sign them
⚖️ Helping you understand your rights and obligations
⚖️ Preparing or organizing documentation if a dispute arises
⚖️ Representing you in Small Claims Court if a contract is breached

A clear contract today can prevent a costly dispute tomorrow.

A little day in the life lately ⚖️

My mornings start quietly — coffee, journaling, and reading the Bible before the day begins. It’s the calm before the busy.

Then it’s time to wake up the kiddos, make lunches and breakfast, and walk them to school and daycare. After drop-off, I’m usually in the office by 9:30.

Today’s schedule looks like:
• Catching up on client files
• Preparing for an upcoming hearing
• Two new client consultations

Running my own practice means my workday is focused, but it also allows me to finish around 2:30 so I can walk back to school for pickup.

The rest of the afternoon is the best part — playing with the kids, prepping dinner, a family walk, and the bedtime routine.

This is exactly why I built Small Town Paralegal — to advocate for my clients while still being present for my family.

A busy, full day and I wouldn’t have it any other way 🤍

When I’m not with my clients, I’m with my family — living life to the fullest. 🤍

One of the reasons I started Small Town Paralegal was to build a career where I could advocate for people while still being present for the moments that matter most with my family and I am so thankful that is exactly what I get to do. 💛

Running a business and raising a family can be busy, but it’s also incredibly rewarding. The balance reminds me every day why I do this work — helping people through difficult situations while building a life that reflects what matters most to me.

Grateful for the clients who trust me to stand in their corner, and for the little people who remind me to enjoy the moments outside of the courtroom.

⚖️ What does a Paralegal do in Ontario?

Many people aren’t sure what a paralegal actually does — but in Ontario, paralegals are licensed legal professionals who can represent clients in several types of legal matters.

In simple terms, a paralegal can help you when you need legal representation without hiring a lawyer.

Paralegals in Ontario can:
• Represent you in Small Claims Court (claims up to $50,000)
• Help with Landlord and Tenant Board matters
• Defend or fight traffic tickets and provincial offences
• Represent clients at tribunals like human rights or employment matters
• Prepare legal documents and guide you through the legal process

Paralegals are regulated by the Law Society of Ontario, which means we must follow strict professional and ethical standards.

Sometimes legal issues feel overwhelming — but understanding your options is the first step.

📌 A paralegal can help you navigate the system, understand your rights, and represent you along the way.
