CAVER RESCUED FROM “PSYCH SQUEEZE” NEAR CANMORE

A caver trapped inside Rat’s Nest Cave near Canmore was successfully rescued after an hours-long operation involving cave rescue specialists, Canmore Fire-Rescue and Kananaskis Mountain Rescue.

The man became stuck vertically in a narrow section of the cave known as the “Psych Squeeze” at about 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 15. Rescue crews carefully used hammer drills to remove rock around him, with progress reportedly measured in inches per hour.

He was freed at approximately 10 p.m. and made it out of the cave around midnight.

The rescue involved 13 cave rescuers, 10 Canmore firefighters and two Kananaskis Mountain Rescue members.

The operation also marked the first real-world deployment of a new volunteer-developed digital cave radio system designed to communicate through hundreds of metres of solid rock.

Earlier this year, FortisAlberta and AltaLink advised Canmore council that power could be proactively shut off as a last-resort safety measure during extreme wildfire conditions.

The recent outage in Radium Hot Springs and several surrounding Columbia Valley communities is a good reminder of why Bow Valley residents should be prepared. Columbia Valley communities were without electricity for roughly 30 hours after storm and wildfire damage affected major power infrastructure.

The circumstances may be different, but the lesson is the same: when wildfire danger is high—especially during hot, dry and windy conditions—extended power outages are possible. Keep essential supplies, flashlights, charged backup batteries and a household emergency plan ready.
