YYC Family Lawyer

YYC Family Lawyer Hi, I’m Gemma — a Calgary family lawyer and member of both the Philippine Bar and the Law Society of Alberta.

I started this page after seeing a lot of incorrect legal information online. My goal is to share accurate, practical guidance about family law.

Getting a divorce in Canada and wondering if it’s recognized in the Philippines? 🇨🇦🇵🇭

In general, a divorce obtained in Canada can be recognized in the Philippines, but it is not automatic.

For Filipinos, recognition usually requires:
• A valid foreign divorce (at least one spouse must be a foreign citizen at the time the divorce was granted), and
• A court process in the Philippines to have that divorce officially recognized.

Without court recognition, Philippine records (including marital status) may still show you as married—even if you are legally divorced in Canada.

Every situation is different, especially when it comes to citizenship, timing, and documents. If you’re thinking about divorce or have already gone through one abroad, getting proper legal advice early can save you a lot of stress later.

Information only, not legal advice.
