Weird English Fact: The plural of "octopus" could be "octopuses," "octopi," OR "octopodes." All three are considered acceptable!

Explanation: Here's the thing: octopus comes from Greek (okto = eight, pous = foot), so technically the Greek plural would be octopodes. But it came to English through Latin, so some people say octopi using Latin rules. However, since it's been an English word since the 1700s, octopuses follows normal English patterns and is most correct. Pick your favourite - you can't really go wrong!

Weird English Fact: Canada's name comes from the Iroquoian word "kanata," meaning "village" or "settlement." We named an entire country after a small village. And there is a city just outside our nation's capital named, Kanata, Tomorrow, July 1, we celebrate Canada Day!

Explanation: When French explorer Jacques Cartier arrived in 1535, Indigenous people used the word kanata to refer to the village of Stadacona (near present-day Québec City). Cartier misunderstood and started using "Canada" to refer to the entire area. By 1545, European maps showed the region as "Canada." So, our nation's name literally means "village," from a simple misunderstanding that has stuck for nearly 500 years. That's very Canadian!

Why do we say one "mouse" but multiple "mice," yet a computer "mouse" can be either "mice" or "mouses" in plural?

Explanation: Traditional animal names like mouse/mice, goose/geese, and tooth/teeth changed their vowels in Old English through something called "umlaut."
But when computer mice were invented in the 1960s, there was debate: do we follow the old pattern (mice) or treat it as a modern word (mouses)? Both are now considered correct! Language evolves, even for tech terminology.

Whether old English or new tech, we get the terminology right in every transcript.

Weird English Fact: "Fast" can mean moving quickly OR stuck in place. Same word, totally opposite meanings.

Explanation: You can drive fast (quickly) or hold fast (firmly, without moving). This contronym is ancient; the "firmly fixed" meaning came first in Old English. It then evolved to also mean "quick" because something moving fast seemed powerful or intense. Now we're stuck with one word that means both "speedy" and "stuck." How's that for irony?

Words can be slippery. Transcripts can't be. That's where Independent Reporters comes in. Trust us with your upcoming discovery work.

We Canadians like having two ways to spell certain words because it provides clarity to the reader. Not only "cheque" and "check," but another common example in Canadian spelling is meter and metre!

Both are units of measurement, but a water "meter" measures the volume of water used, while a "metre" measures distance.

We always double-check every transcript, spelled the Canadian way, of course!

Weird English Fact: "Equinox" means "equal night" in Latin, when day and night are perfectly balanced at 12 hours each!

Explanation: The word equinox comes from Latin aequus (equal) + nox (night). During the spring equinox, daylight and darkness are roughly equal all over the planet - 12 hours each. This astronomical event marks the official start of spring for us here in the Northern Hemisphere. Ancient cultures celebrated this balance, and we still mark it in our calendars today. Perfect linguistic symmetry for a perfectly balanced day!
