Weird English Fact: "Equinox" means "equal night" in Latin, when day and night are perfectly balanced at 12 hours each!

Explanation: The word equinox comes from Latin aequus (equal) + nox (night). During the spring equinox, daylight and darkness are roughly equal all over the planet - 12 hours each. This astronomical event marks the official start of spring for us here in the Northern Hemisphere. Ancient cultures celebrated this balance, and we still mark it in our calendars today. Perfect linguistic symmetry for a perfectly balanced day!

We're talking letters. Specifically, the letter L.
So, raise your hand if you've ever been corrected by an American spell-check in your software. 🙋
You weren't wrong, you're just being Canadian! Just like our transcripts, Canadian spelling to the core, unless we're doing depositions, then we switch things up.

English spellings are English spellings, right? Well, not always.
Canadian English spellings are closely tied to our British heritage, but we have also adopted US spellings as well.
"Cheque" in Canada is "Check" in the US. "Litre" in Canada, then "Liter" in the US. And the list goes on...

We Canadians do like that our own language is unique, but there are some words where we don't hold true to the British spellings, such as "tyre."

Did you know that we create multi-lingual transcripts?
When we provide service for our Canadian clients, Canadian spellings are used. However, when we take depositions for our US clients, we switch to US spellings.

We do this because US clients may not recognize "cheque" as a form of payment, so if they search for "check" in their transcript, they won't find it.

The bottom line - trust Independent Reporters to ensure the words are correct, no matter which version of English is being spoken in your transcript!

Queue is probably one of the strangest words with many characters that really don't have any use. Understanding words for proper content is what court reporters do best!

Rendezvous is another strange one that phonetically is nowhere close to how it is spelled, and another example of how French words became part of the English language.

Court reporters deal with all kinds of pronunciations during a discovery, and words can be spelled much differently than they sound.
And since we're discussing a military word, how about "lieutenant."? In Canada, we pronounce this - "leftenant," while our neighbours to the south say, "lootenant."
