The Supreme Court of Canada has made a major decision for survivors of intimate partner violence.
The Court recognized that abuse in a relationship can go beyond isolated acts of physical violence. It also includes a pattern of controlling behaviours such as manipulation, fear tactics, isolation and financial control.
In simple terms: this decision could allow survivors to sue for damages in civil court when they’ve experienced abuse in a relationship.
The Court also recognized that there was a gap in the law: that existing legal claims didn’t fully capture the harm intimate partner violence can cause to a person’s dignity, autonomy, and equality.
It’s a significant shift in how intimate partner violence is recognized in Canadian law. ❤️
