Following our documentary night on November 30th, we’re excited to have Elizabeth Ramirez, a member of the “San Antonio Four”, speak to us on December 2nd about her experience being wrongfully convicted. This Q+A style event will be taking place on zoom and we encourage attendees to watch “Southwest of Salem: The Story of the San Antonio Four” prior to the talk. If you are interested in topics like psychology, wrongful convictions, and LGBTQIA2S+ rights, this is a not to miss event!

Meet Maria, one of our two Marketing and Communications VPs:

"Hi! I’m Maria, and I’m one of your Marketing and Communications VPs. I’m a 1L at UCalgary Law, and I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from MRU (go Cougars)! I’m especially passionate about social psychology, and am very excited to work with the club to build on what I learned during my undergrad. Principles of social influence and persuasion are way cool, and have an impact in so many areas, even the law! When I’m not doing school work—which I do far too much of lately—I’m watching documentaries, baking, or drawing. I can’t wait to see what incredible things we accomplish and learn this school year!"

Let's welcome our VP Podcasting, Martika!

"Hi all! My name is Martika and I'm a 1L at UCalgary Law. Prior to law school, I received a BSc in Psychology and BA in Sociology, and I worked in the public service as a Senior Immigration Officer. This year I will be serving as VP Podcasting for the Law and Psychology Club. In this role, I hope to deliver interesting, engaging, and accessible information on the intersection of law and psychology through a series of podcast episodes, all while learning more about it myself. Outside of school, I enjoy hiking, spending time with friends, and checking out new coffee shops and restaurants around the city."

The UCalgary Law and Psychology Club is excited to present our very first event—a screening of the eye-opening documentary, “Southwest of Salem: The Story of the San Antonio Four”, followed by an evening at The Den. Here is a brief synopsis:

“Southwest of Salem: The Story of the San Antonio Four excavates the nightmarish persecution of Elizabeth Ramirez, Cassandra Rivera, Kristie Mayhugh, and Anna Vasquez — four Latina le****ns wrongfully convicted of gang-raping two little girls in San Antonio, Texas.”

Lastly, we are honoured to announce that Elizabeth Ramirez, one of the San Antonio Four, has kindly agreed to speak with us at a Q & A panel on December 2. Sign up for the documentary screening here if you're interested:

Say hello to Seychelle, Secretary of our club:

"Hi everyone! My name is Seychelle and I’m the Secretary for the Law and Psychology Club. I am currently a 1L student at the University of Calgary Faculty of Law. Before attending law school, I received my BSc in Nursing at Dalhousie University and worked as a Registered Nurse for 3 years in Nova Scotia. Although I only took a few psychology courses in my undergrad, I’m excited to learn more about the intersect between law and psychology through this club. Outside of school I love spending time with friends and exploring the city!"

Meet one of our two Events VPs, Kendall:

"Hi everyone! My name is Kendall and I am a 1L at UCalgary Law. I am one of the two events VP’s at the Law and Psychology Club. I have my BScH in Psychology from Queen’s University and am looking forward to being a part of the club! I am excited to learn more about the intersections between law and psychology. I think understanding how people think and behave is applicable to all areas of life, but is especially relevant to the field of law. Outside of school I like to play soccer, hang out with my dog, and (après) ski with my twin sister!"

Meet Hasti, the Vice President of the UCalgary Law and Psychology Club:

"Hi everyone! My name is Hasti and I’m a 1L at University of Calgary’s Faculty of Law. I’m also serving as the Law and Psychology Club’s Vice President this year, and I couldn’t be more excited. I have my BScH in Biopsychology from Queen’s University, and I cannot believe how applicable that degree has already been in law school – it’s great to have the chance to introduce that knowledge to my fellow JD students who don’t have the same background, but are interested in learning more about the rich intersection of law and psychology. Outside of law school (if there is such a thing), I love to pretend I enjoy going for runs, curate sonically conflicting playlists, and plan out exactly how overdressed I want to be at the next function."
