Thirty days in jail (not 15 days, as reported) for an Indigenous man with two nominal shoplifting thefts is a wildly disproportionate sentence. I am appalled that any lawyer, Crown or defence, would think this is a fit and proper sentence.

This is the exact correct position for all defence lawyers to have. If your lawyer doesn't actually believe in the presumption of innocence, then you need to get a new lawyer.
