Truth and Reconciliation Day/Orange Shirt Day
September 30th is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation—a day to honour survivors of residential schools, remember the children who never made it home, and acknowledge the lasting impacts of this history on Indigenous communities across Canada. It is also Orange Shirt Day, affirming that Every Child Matters.
At GKS Law Firm, we recognize that reconciliation is not just about remembrance, but also about action. During our monthly meeting this month (Session 17), our team took time to reflect on this history and discuss our role as legal professionals in advancing reconciliation. We discussed the Calls to Action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada and for an overview of the key aspects of the need for cultural competency in legal practice. We focused on developing communication skills that meet individual needs and ensuring strategies for client-centered advocacy are in place to best represent our diverse clients. Next month, we’ll continue this mini-series by honing in on varied experiences in the BC healthcare and workers’ compensation systems, as well as some of the forms of reconciliation and resources available within these systems.
We are committed to ongoing learning, humility, and accountability in this work. Today, we stand in solidarity with Indigenous peoples and reaffirm our responsibility to help build a more just and equitable future.
Please note that our offices will be closed on Tuesday, September 30th, in honour of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
